On February 26, 2025, Chipotle premiered Unfolded, an animated short film about sustainable agriculture, inside its Chipotle Burrito Builder experience on Roblox. The launch combined an interactive food-reward promotion with news of $2 million in university donations. The Roblox offer was temporary: its codes expired in March 2025 and cannot be claimed now.
What Chipotle launched
Unfolded was more than an in-game billboard. Chipotle presented it as a short film and a national-TV-style advertisement that premiered inside Roblox. The company said the film was its first national television ad premiere in the “metaverse,” a description that refers to the Roblox activation rather than a conventional television broadcast. Chipotle’s announcement describes the project and its donation plans.
The film’s visual idea was a Chipotle bag unfolding into a paper-crafted agricultural world. Its story moved through diverse farms, agricultural technology, responsibly raised proteins, pasture-raised dairy and the journey from farm to restaurant, reflecting the company’s “Food With Integrity” positioning. Singer Halsey supplied a cover of “She’s a Rainbow.”
How the Roblox premiere worked
The activation used the existing Chipotle Burrito Builder experience as both a game and a distribution channel. Players had to complete an in-world task before viewing the film:

The premiere was scheduled for 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time on February 26, 2025. That sequence made watching an advertisement an activity with a clear game loop: virtual labor produced admission, and admission could lead to a real-world restaurant reward.
What the free-food promotion actually offered
The reward was a free entrée code, not an unlimited promise of a free burrito. The official promotion terms controlled the details:

The terms also included age and phone-number requirements. Watching the film alone did not guarantee a reward; the delivery quest, ticket, eligibility conditions and remaining inventory all mattered. Because the promotion ended in 2025, Roblox users searching for it in 2026 should not expect an active code or current giveaway.

Where the $2 million went
Chipotle announced four equal contributions of $500,000 to agricultural and educational initiatives:

Agrivoltaics combines solar panels with agricultural production, giving the Ohio State allocation a concrete research application. Chipotle framed the university support as an investment in future farmers and sustainable-agriculture research. The amounts and purposes are detailed in the company’s February 2025 release.
How the donation fits the $5 million commitment
The $2 million was not presented as a new, standalone $5 million gift. It formed part of a broader $5 million commitment Chipotle announced in 2021 to support young farmers and the future of farming. The company cited an initiative directing 5% of profits from Tractor Beverage sales toward farmer support.

Chipotle also invited U.S. customers to round up orders in its app and on its website through March 31, 2025, with those proceeds supporting the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation. That customer-roundup effort was a separate fundraising mechanism from the university grants and from the Tractor Beverage profit contribution.
Why Roblox was strategically useful
Roblox let Chipotle turn an advertisement into participation. The experience supplied a destination, a task, a screening room and a scarce real-world incentive in one environment. The film carried the brand’s farming message, while the entrée code connected virtual activity to Chipotle’s digital ordering channels.

That continuity matters: Unfolded extended an established branded game into an entertainment premiere, rather than building a one-off virtual location solely for the film.

Chipotle called itself the first restaurant brand to premiere a national TV ad in the metaverse. Super League, an activation partner, separately called it the first-ever 30-second restaurant-ad debut in the metaverse. Those are claims by the company and its partner, not independently verified records of every advertisement in Roblox or every virtual world.
The defensible description is narrower: Chipotle premiered a national-TV-style, 30-second restaurant advertisement inside its Roblox experience and paired it with an interactive promotion. It should not be expanded into a claim that Chipotle was the first brand ever to advertise on Roblox or in a metaverse.

Reported campaign results
Super League later reported that the activation distributed 50,000 free burritos in its first hour and reached a rate of 1,000 burritos in one minute. Those figures come from the commercial partner, not an independent audit, and should be read separately from Chipotle’s official description of up to 50,000 free entrée codes. Super League also described the film as a global feature in the Chipotle Burrito Builder experience. Its account is available in the company’s announcement.
Why the campaign mattered
The significance was the combination of four elements that are often reported separately: a branded Roblox game, a short-form entertainment asset, a limited real-world reward and a purpose-led funding announcement with identifiable university recipients. The virtual quest generated attention and action; the film made sustainable agriculture the narrative; and the grants gave the campaign a concrete institutional component.
As a historical case, it also shows the trade-off in purpose marketing on game platforms. The agriculture message was embedded in an experience designed to drive participation and food redemption. That does not make the sustainability theme incidental, but it does mean the film functioned simultaneously as entertainment, advertising and a promotional funnel.
