There is no reliable evidence that the viral TikTok suppliers are selling authentic Hermès, Birkenstock or Lululemon products straight from the factories that make them. Reporting in April 2025 found that the sellers’ claims were unsubstantiated; an industry consultant told GQ that legitimate supplier contracts prohibit factories from selling branded products directly. That makes the offers suspicious, but it does not prove that every item promoted by every seller is counterfeit.
What did the TikTok suppliers claim?
In April 2025, videos attributed to Chinese suppliers pitched dramatically cheaper goods associated with luxury and premium brands. GQ reported one video advertising Birkenstock-style Boston clogs for $10, compared with a $165 price cited on the brand’s website. Another removed account offered a purported cost breakdown for a Birkin bag. These were claims made in videos, not independently verified prices, factory relationships or product origins. GQ’s reporting also noted that many of the videos had been removed. TikTok said it removes accounts and content that violate its rules against marketing counterfeit goods.
KPBS/NPR’s account described a recurring sales pitch: a supposed factory owner says European luxury companies have products made in Chinese factories, add logos elsewhere, and then sell them at a large markup. Fashion writer Derek Guy questioned the materials and costing presented in one Birkin video, including the speaker’s description of the leather. That is commentary on a particular viral example, not proof about every factory or any brand’s full supply chain.
Does “made in China” mean a product is fake?
No. A product’s country of manufacture alone does not establish whether it is authentic. Global supply chains can span several countries, but the fact that a brand manufactures some goods or components in China does not show that an unrelated seller has permission to sell authentic finished products.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The key leap in the videos—from “some manufacturing happens in China” to “this seller can provide the same authentic product without the brand”—is not demonstrated by the reporting. GQ quoted global textile and apparel consultant Margaret Bishop saying that legitimate supplier contracts prohibit factories from selling directly to consumers, “with or without a logo, with or without finishing.” She added that a factory selling a luxury product without the brand owner’s authorization would still be acting without authorization. The GQ report does not establish the contractual status of any specific supplier in the videos.
Authentic product, counterfeit or lookalike: what is the difference?
| Type | What it means | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Authentic branded product | A genuine item sold by the brand or an authorized seller. | Check the brand’s authorized-seller information and whether the item’s provenance can be verified. |
| Counterfeit | An item falsely presented as a branded original, often through unauthorized use of the brand’s name, logo or other source-identifying marks. | Consider whether the seller is claiming the item is an original and whether its branding and provenance are supported. |
| Unbranded lookalike or “dupe” | An independent product that resembles a design or feature without necessarily claiming to be the branded original. | Look at whether it uses protected branding or otherwise misleads buyers. “Dupe” is not a legal determination. |
A lower price or similar appearance alone does not settle authenticity or legality. The Associated Press explains that a dupe is not automatically unlawful: trademark, copyright, design rights and the likelihood of consumer confusion can all matter. Its June 30, 2025 report discusses the distinction.

How can shoppers assess a suspicious offer?
“Same factory” is not proof of authorization, provenance or authenticity. Manufacturing footage, a logo, an authenticity card and a seller’s personal testimonial are not verification on their own. Before paying, assess the whole offer:
- Check the seller. See whether the brand identifies the seller as authorized. If the seller cannot provide verifiable provenance, do not treat factory claims as a substitute.
- Question the price and story. An extreme discount and vague, changing claims about a factory relationship are warning signs, not proof of a bargain.
- Review payment and returns. Read the return terms and use a payment method with a dispute process.
- For secondhand luxury, consider independent authentication. Check that the provider currently supports the brand and service you need; authentication can be relevant to a particular item, unlike a seller’s general claim.
These precautions matter in the wider context of social-media shopping, though the available federal figures are not specific to counterfeit luxury. The Federal Trade Commission said consumers reported losing more than $1.2 billion to fraud that started on social media in 2022. In 2021, consumers reported about $770 million in losses from fraud initiated there; online-shopping scams generated the largest number of social-media fraud reports that year, including reports of advertised goods that never arrived. The FTC’s 2023 figures and its 2022 report on 2021 data cover social-media fraud generally, not these TikTok luxury offers in particular.

What is known—and not known—about these specific goods?
The reporting did not authenticate or physically test products from the TikTok sellers. It also did not establish the contractual status of the suppliers or determine whether any particular item was counterfeit, an unauthorized replica or an unbranded lookalike. NPR said it sought comment from Hermès but had not received a reply by publication. The videos and accounts may also change or disappear, so an individual listing needs to be evaluated on its own evidence.
GQ also relayed a safety claim from Entrupy CEO Vidyuth Srinivasan: he said more than 60% of thousands of counterfeit goods tested by the company contained harmful chemicals such as arsenic or lead. That is his account of Entrupy’s tested sample, not an independently verified estimate of counterfeit products generally or of the items in the TikTok videos. GQ’s report attributes the statement to Srinivasan.
