What is Cherlato?
Cherlato is a mobile gelato business created by Cher and Gianpaolo “Giapo” Grazioli, the New Zealand artisan behind Auckland’s Giapo shop. The brand announced its Los Angeles debut on July 27, 2023, saying the truck would begin serving during the weekend starting July 28. Cherlato’s launch announcement described gelato made fresh daily with seasonal ingredients.
The project grew from an encounter in Auckland: Cher told Vogue in September 2023 that she came across Grazioli’s shop while touring there in 2018. She connected the truck idea to childhood memories of an ice-cream truck, saying she had loved ice cream then and still did. The launch release quoted her saying, “It’s the gelato that gets you out of bed at midnight.”

The launch announcement also mentioned optional toppings. Vogue reported ornate gold cones and a gold-dusted cotton-candy detail for the kefir-and-cardamom flavor. These are reported launch-era details, not confirmation of what the truck serves now.
Why the menu was designed to change
Cherlato’s launch menu balanced familiar ideas with less expected combinations. In Vogue’s account, Cher’s coffee-and-donuts flavor represented the familiar side, while Giapo’s avocado-on-toast concept pushed into more unusual territory. The format was deliberately flexible: Vogue reported that the truck held five flavors at a time, and Grazioli said, “The menu will more than rotate, it will evolve,” with seasons, ingredients and customer tastes shaping it.

The launch release named Alexandre Family Farm, Alana’s Coffee Roasters, Kimball Avocados, Malibu Mylk, Arnett Farms, Bill’s Bees Honey and Watkins Organic Mexican Vanilla as ingredient partners. It described the ingredients as locally sourced, regenerative, fresh and premium. Those sourcing and sustainability descriptions are Cherlato’s own claims in its brand-issued announcement; the cited reporting does not independently audit them.

Cherlato’s official website advertises the truck for hire at events in Los Angeles and nearby surrounding areas.
