Norm Peterson’s best Cheers jokes start with an ordinary greeting and end somewhere nobody expects: a bleak little truth, a beer, or a punchline about his own body. George Wendt’s relaxed delivery is part of the effect. Here are 10 lines that show why the bar’s most dependable regular remains so funny.
The lines with the strongest transcript support
1. “Well, it’s a dog-eat-dog world, Sammy, and I’m wearing Milk-Bone underwear.”
Norm takes a familiar expression and makes it literal in the most undignified way possible. The image is absurd, but his matter-of-fact delivery keeps it from sounding like a rehearsed gag. NPR’s transcript of Wendt performing as Norm records the line: NPR’s remembrance of George Wendt.

2. “Not enough.”
Sam asks Norm what he knows; Norm answers with two words. The joke is the gap between the size of Sam’s question and the total bluntness of the reply. It is a small example of how Cheers lets Norm puncture a conversation without raising his voice. The exchange appears in NPR’s transcript linked above.
3. “My ideal weight, if I were 11 feet tall.”
Asked the familiar “What are you up to, Norm?”, he answers with a mathematically impossible qualification. The line turns a routine greeting into a self-deprecating joke about his weight, and it is recorded in an episode transcript as well as IMDb’s Cheers quote database.

Greetings that turn into punchlines
4. “My nipples—it’s freezing out there.”
When someone asks what’s up, Norm gives a literal, bodily answer rather than the expected status report. The season-nine celebration transcript records the line, which makes it one of the clearest examples of his knack for turning a familiar greeting into a quick gag. It appears in the same episode-transcript collection as the next line: Cheers and Bar episode transcripts.
5. “Women. You can’t live with ’em. Pass the beer nuts.”
Norm starts with a complaint that sounds like a grand pronouncement about relationships, then swerves straight to bar snacks. The abrupt shift is the joke: the beer nuts matter more than the sentiment. The full exchange is recorded in the episode transcript linked above.

6. “What’s shaking, Norm?” / “All four cheeks and a couple of chins.”
This answer, recorded in a Grand Valley State University compilation, treats a casual greeting as an invitation to mock himself. Norm’s reply is deliberately unglamorous and specific, which makes the image funnier than a generic wisecrack. The GVSU compilation of Norm quotes records the exchange.
Beer, bar talk and verbal reversals
7. “A little early, isn’t it, Woody?” / “For a beer?” / “No. For stupid questions.”
Woody supplies the obvious interpretation; Norm turns the exchange around with the final line. The joke moves quickly from a question about the hour to a gentle insult, a neat fit for the bar’s conversational rhythm. IMDb’s quote database and the GVSU compilation both list the exchange: IMDb and GVSU.

8. “Boy meets beer. Boy drinks beer. Boy meets another beer.”
The GVSU compilation records this miniature plot summary of Norm’s evening. Its mock-epic structure gives a familiar bar routine the shape of a complete story—and makes beer both the subject and the punchline.
9. “How’s it going, Mr. Peterson?” / “Poor.” / “I’m sorry to hear that.” / “No, I mean pour.”
In this exchange recorded by GVSU, a single word changes the meaning of the whole conversation. Norm answers a question about his well-being with a request for a drink, using the sound of “poor” and “pour” to steer the exchange back toward the bar.
10. “Terrorists, Sam. They’ve taken over my stomach and they’re demanding beer.”
The GVSU compilation records this mock-emergency explanation of Norm’s hunger. He inflates an ordinary appetite into a crisis, but the demand is still just beer: the grand language and the mundane need are the contrast.

Many of these jokes depend on their setup: “What’s up?”, “What’s shaking?” and “How’s it going?” invite predictable answers, and Norm refuses to give one. Other lines make beer the point of the story, the solution to hunger, or the only subject worth discussing. His self-deprecation—about weight, his body, and his routines—stays controlled rather than turning into a speech.

Wendt’s timing is essential to that restraint. The Associated Press identifies Norm Peterson as the gentle, beer-loving character most associated with Wendt and reports that the actor received six consecutive Emmy nominations from 1984 through 1989. NPR’s transcript preserves several lines as Wendt performed them, where the calm delivery lets the punchline arrive without fanfare. Associated Press obituary for George Wendt.
