In a PEOPLE email interview, the actor and producer said Terkanian’s determination drew her to Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, Netflix’s two-part documentary about the search for answers.
Why Charlize Theron wanted to tell Cathy Terkanian’s story
Theron came across Nile Cappello’s feature “The Girl in the Picture” while scrolling Apple News on her phone at night. She sent it to her production partners and, as she recalled to PEOPLE, said, “we have to do this.” Cappello’s feature was published by The Atavist Magazine in August 2021.

What stayed with Theron was Terkanian’s persistence. “Her determination, resilience and honestly how badass she was!” Theron told PEOPLE. “She never let anyone tell her no, she trusted her instincts, and she is a true personification of the power of motherhood.”
Theron also saw a story that widened the usual true-crime frame. “A story that touches on the complexities of adoption, motherhood, found family. You don’t see that too often in this genre – it felt fresh and much needed,” she said.

Who is Cathy Terkanian, and what happened to her daughter?
According to PEOPLE, Terkanian gave birth to a daughter named Alexis in 1974 and placed her for adoption. The child was renamed Aundria Bowman. PEOPLE says Terkanian was 17 when she gave birth; The Atavist and TIME report that she was 16. The sources therefore disagree on her age, and it is not possible to resolve that discrepancy from these accounts.
In 2010, adoption officials contacted Terkanian for a DNA sample after human remains were found in Wisconsin. The remains were not identified as Alexis, but Terkanian learned that her daughter had been missing since 1989. PEOPLE describes Terkanian, a retired nurse, as beginning a decade-long effort to find out what had happened.

Aundria was 14 when she disappeared. Cappello’s Atavist account says she was last seen alive on March 11, 1989, and that Dennis Bowman told police she was missing. Police initially treated the case as a runaway disappearance. These details come from the published reporting; the documentary’s scenes and testimony are not independent confirmation of every allegation or event.
What the documentary covers
Netflix describes Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter as a 2024 documentary in two parts, following a mother’s effort to unravel the mystery around the 1989 disappearance of the daughter she placed for adoption.

| Part 1 | Cathy learns about Aundria’s disappearance and finds a suspect. | 1 hour 13 minutes |
| Part 2 | A surprise arrest in a separate long-standing cold case brings Cathy closer to finding out what happened. | 1 hour 18 minutes |

How the separate cold case connects to the search
The documentary’s second part follows a surprise arrest in another case, not a resolution that automatically answers every question about Aundria. TIME’s account, published in 2024 and updated in January 2026, says investigators connected Bowman to a 1980 Virginia murder using DNA evidence from a bedspread and a cup he had used. TIME corrected its account on September 13, 2024: Bowman did not expressly agree to a DNA test; an investigator obtained and tested the cup he was drinking from.
Rank #4
TIME reports that Bowman was sentenced for second-degree murder on February 7, 2022, and was serving two life sentences. The documentary’s director, Ryan White, told TIME, “I still am not sure that Dennis has ever told the full truth about what happened to Aundria.” That distinction matters: the separate case and arrest form part of the chronology, but do not by themselves settle what happened to Aundria.

Theron told PEOPLE, “I hope they feel moved by Cathy’s story, and also inspired by her resilience.” Terkanian’s search is the film’s center: a birth mother pursuing answers after discovering that the daughter she had placed for adoption had been missing for years.
