Yes. Charlize Theron appeared at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Milan on 6 February, delivering a message of peace as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Some contemporary coverage called it a surprise appearance; the UN confirmed her role and remarks but did not use that description.
What happened at the Opening Ceremony?
Theron took the stage at the ceremony at San Siro Stadium in Milan. The International Olympic Committee had announced the ceremony for 6 February 2026 and described a program themed around Italian history, design, music, film and art. Its advance performer announcement did not list Theron, though that omission alone does not establish that her appearance was deliberately kept secret. IOC announcement, 23 January 2026.
The United Nations confirmed her appearance on the day of the ceremony and identified her as a UN Messenger of Peace. The “surprise” framing appeared in contemporary secondary coverage, including Indulge Express; it is not how the UN described the moment.
What did Charlize Theron say?
Theron spoke about the Olympic Truce and quoted a message of peace associated with Nelson Mandela. The UN report records her saying:
#1 Best Overall
“Peace is not just the absence of conflict. Peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference.”
She continued:
“today, this message seems more relevant than ever. So let these Games be more than just sport. Let them be a reminder of our common humanity, our respect for one another, and a resounding call for peace everywhere.”
The quotations and her role are documented in the United Nations report published on 6 February 2026.
