Why 31 August is significant to the Spencer family
Diana, Princess of Wales, died in Paris on 31 August 1997 after a car crash. Her brother Charles Spencer grew up with her in the Spencer family. The Royal Family biography says the family moved to Althorp in 1975.
After Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997, her coffin was taken to Althorp, where she was buried on an island in the centre of an ornamental lake. The estate therefore connects the anniversary photographs to the place where she was laid to rest.

From the 1997 funeral eulogy to a brief anniversary message
Spencer delivered a public tribute at Diana’s funeral. In his eulogy at Westminster Abbey on 6 September 1997, he said: “Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty.” That speech was a formal tribute delivered at the funeral; the short caption reported in 2026 was a separate remembrance on the anniversary of her death.

Us Weekly reported that Spencer’s book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister was scheduled for 22 September 2026. The outlet quoted a statement from a press release describing its aim as telling “the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective,” and comparing that intention with his funeral speech. The book announcement is distinct from the anniversary post.
