In 2017, Seattle photographer Charles Peterson brought grunge-era images and everyday photographs to Instagram while adjusting to its immediacy after decades shaped by film and the darkroom.

In December 2017, Seattle photographer Charles Peterson joined Instagram, bringing both archival images from the grunge era and glimpses of everyday life to a platform he had long viewed as built around mobile photography. His first week there was not a declaration that he had left film behind; it was an attempt to find his way through a faster, more immediate medium.

Why Charles Peterson joined Instagram in 2017

GeekWire reported on December 29, 2017, that Peterson had signed up the previous week. At the time, his account had 15 posts and 700 followers. He was sharing classic photographs alongside everyday images. Those figures describe the account in the article’s first-week snapshot, not its present-day status.

Peterson told GeekWire that he had hesitated because he associated Instagram with taking pictures on a phone, and he did not think his phone was good enough. He eventually bought a used Google Pixel XL for $300, according to the 2017 profile. That was a personal, period-specific purchase, not a current camera-phone recommendation.

The platform’s pace also felt different from the way he was used to making photographs. “It just relies on the instantaneousness of imagery more, I think, than I’m used to, so I kind of have to find my way through it,” he said.

The grunge-era photographer behind the new account

Peterson became known for photographs of Seattle-area bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney in the 1980s and 1990s. The GeekWire headline framed his career as 30 years of documenting grunge’s rise; the profile itself places his new social-media experiment against a long practice of making and preserving images.

Peterson described Seattle’s music scene as “the last great music scene before the age of the internet.” That is his characterization of the period, rather than an objective ranking of music scenes.

From film and the darkroom to a digitized archive

Film and darkroom printing shaped Peterson’s approach to photography. “I’m old school. I come from the dark room days,” he told GeekWire. He said the early transition to digital was difficult because he felt the technology then could not match what film could do.

Digitizing his archive with an Imacon desktop scanner helped change that relationship. Peterson said it let him work through his archive without relying on the darkroom, whose chemicals had taken a physical toll. “That sort of changed my life in one aspect, to be able to start digitizing my archives and get out of the dark room, because the dark room was literally killing me, from the chemistry,” he said.

That shift matters to the Instagram story: posting older photographs was possible because the images could be carried forward from an archive, even as Peterson adjusted to a platform organized around quick, mobile sharing.

Why he resisted relying on filters

Peterson’s preference for getting the photograph right at the moment of capture carried over to his view of Instagram editing. “I don’t use filters much at all. You just need to take the picture right in the first place,” he said. In the profile, he cautioned against overusing filters and emphasized intention and layers within the photograph itself.

This was Peterson’s own working philosophy, not a rule for every Instagram photographer. It reflects the deliberate image-making he valued even in a service he saw as more immediate.

Everyday family photographs and the idea behind “Child’s Play”

The profile distinguishes between Peterson’s casual photographs of his children and a longer-term project he then called “Child’s Play.” He said he had made approximately 60,000 photographs of his children over the years, but the project was intended to do more than document his family: it aimed to evoke viewers’ own childhood memories.

That distinction separates personal snapshots from a body of work designed to invite a broader response. GeekWire reported the project under the title “Child’s Play”; the article does not establish its current title, status, or availability.

What the 2017 profile says about Peterson’s photography business

At the time, GeekWire described print sales and image licensing as major parts of Peterson’s income and mentioned books without naming a title or giving a current sales listing. The profile also notes that he owned a Leica M10. These details document his circumstances in 2017; they do not establish present-day print availability, licensing terms, book catalog, or equipment recommendations.

The article reported that Instagram had 800 million monthly users at the time. That is a contemporaneous figure included in the 2017 story, not a current platform statistic.

What the Instagram debut reveals—and what it does not

Peterson’s first week on Instagram captures a photographer with a substantial analog archive adapting to a fast-moving digital venue. He brought historical work and daily life to the same feed while questioning the service’s immediacy and resisting heavy filter use. The profile documents that moment; it does not verify what he posts or how he uses Instagram today.
