Denji defeats Makima in chapter 97. He explains that he believed she had never truly recognized him as Denji, and he frames what he does as an expression of love rather than an attack. Makima’s defeat does not end the Control Devil: the finale introduces Nayuta, its reborn form, and leaves Denji responsible for caring for her.
How Denji defeats Makima
In the Part 1 finale, Denji defeats Makima. The official English-language VIZ listing includes chapter 97, the chapter to read for the ending, and provides a route to purchase the collected volume: Chainsaw Man chapter listing.
Denji’s explanation centers on recognition. He says he had gambled that Makima perceived people by smell and had not truly seen him as Denji, even while she recognized Chainsaw Man. The distinction matters: this is Denji’s stated reasoning in the story, not a separately confirmed explanation of every detail behind Makima’s powers or protection.
The ending frames Denji’s act as love rather than violence. That is how the chapter’s resolution presents his choice; it should not be treated as a complete account of the mechanics of Makima’s contract.

What Nayuta’s appearance means
The finale introduces Nayuta, a young girl identified as the Control Devil reborn. She is connected to Makima through the devil identity, but the ending presents her as a new child—not Makima simply continuing unchanged with the same identity and memories.
That shift gives Denji a new responsibility. After defeating Makima, he is left to care for Nayuta, turning the close of Part 1 toward a difficult new relationship rather than suggesting that the Control Devil has ceased to exist.

Where to read the ending
Chapter 97 is the primary reading target for the Part 1 finale. VIZ’s English-language series listing includes the chapter and a volume purchase option. The available listing is an access page, not a plot recap, so the chapter itself is the place to check the exact staging and dialogue.
