Chainsaw Man chapter 173 makes its central reversal easy to anticipate: after the Ear Devil is erased, Public Safety works to make Pochita return it. But knowing the likely outcome does not necessarily soften the horror. The crisis turns an ordinary human sense into a sudden absence, and correcting it demands a grotesque, coordinated intervention.
What happens in Chainsaw Man chapter 173?
Spoilers for chapter 173. The chapter opens on the consequences of Pochita’s attack: ears have disappeared from people and animals. Public Safety identifies the erased entity as the Ear Devil, then organizes a way to communicate and intervene. Yoshida and the Octopus Devil restrain Pochita, forcing him to return the Ear Devil. Ears reappear, reversing the immediate erasure.

The official VIZ chapter page lists the English release as August 13, 2024. A secondary chapter reference calls the chapter “Hard of Hearing,” associates it with volume 19 and gives August 7, 2024; that title is a reference’s English rendering, not a title verified on VIZ’s listing.
Does predictability spoil the horror?
The chapter’s mechanics become legible once Public Safety recognizes what vanished: the immediate problem is how to reverse the erasure. That clarity can make the broad turn foreseeable. But suspense is not the only way a scene unsettles. The loss of a basic sense disrupts communication and ordinary life, while the effort to correct it brings bodily harm and coordinated violence into the response.

That contrast gives the chapter a different question to press on: not simply “what will happen?” but “how disturbing will the correction be, and what will it cost?” The reversal may be anticipated without making the premise or intervention comfortable. This is an interpretation of the sequence, not a claim about what every reader feels or what Tatsuki Fujimoto intended.
Why does chapter 173 bring back the Ear Devil?
Within the chapter’s events, Public Safety identifies the Ear Devil as the entity erased by Pochita. Its intervention aims to make Pochita return that Devil; once he does, ears reappear. The reversal restores what the disappearance removed, while the means of reaching it keep the crisis from feeling like a clean or painless reset.
