Céline Dion and René Angélil began as singer and manager, then built a private romance, a marriage, a family and a working partnership that remained closely connected for the rest of Angélil’s life. They married on December 17, 1994, at Montréal’s Notre-Dame Basilica and had three children: René-Charles, Nelson and Eddy.

From management to personal trust
During the later 1980s and early 1990s, the relationship became romantic after Dion had reached adulthood. Accounts describe the romance as private for a period before it was acknowledged publicly. Were Céline Dion and René Angélil married?
Yes. Dion’s official biography records that they married on December 17, 1994, at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montréal. The ceremony established the relationship publicly after a period in which their romance had been kept private.
The basilica later became significant again when Angélil’s funeral was held there. His official obituary said that, according to his final wishes, the funeral would take place at the same church where he had chosen to marry Dion 21 years earlier. Returning to that location connected the beginning of their marriage with the family’s farewell.

This was not a relationship in which career and home life were easily separated. Angélil had helped shape Dion’s professional path from its early stages, and their marriage continued within that shared working history. Dion’s career obligations, his management role and their family responsibilities were interdependent rather than neatly divided into separate spheres.

The more certain facts are the chronology of their professional partnership, the later transition to a romantic relationship in Dion’s adulthood, their 1994 marriage and the family they built afterward. 5. Legacy after Angélil’s death
Angélil died on January 14, 2016. The official family tribute described him as leaving his beloved wife and children and returning to the basilica where he and Dion had married. Angélil’s obituary on CelineDion.com stated: “According to his final wishes, his Funeral will be held at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, where 21 years ago, he chose to marry the one who will remain as the great love of his life, the artist for which he had the most respect, the woman who gave him light and happiness until his very last breath.”
The quotation is significant because it joins the relationship’s central themes in one statement: marriage, artistic respect, emotional devotion and the basilica as a shared landmark. It is also an official family description, so it should be read as a tribute rather than as an independent measurement of every aspect of their private life.
What happened after René Angélil’s death?
After Angélil died in 2016, Dion’s life and career continued without the partner who had been both her husband and an important figure in her professional development. The relationship remained part of the context through which audiences understood her family responsibilities, public appearances and decisions about work.

A later companion for viewers is the documentary I Am: Celine Dion, identified by Le Monde as an Amazon Prime release from June 2024.
