It says treatments of this kind can cost tens of thousands of dollars per round, but it does not establish what Lopez paid or that the procedures slow aging. The reported package also included treatments that are not stem-cell therapy.
What the celebrity report does—and does not—show
The Daily Beast reported that Lopez received therapeutic plasma exchange, NK cell therapy and stem-cell infusions at Proactive Longevity in Cabo San Lucas. The outlet’s “tens of thousands of dollars per round” description refers broadly to the regenerative therapies discussed; it is not a disclosed or verified bill for Lopez.
That is one media report, not evidence of a widespread celebrity spending trend. Nor does a celebrity’s choice or endorsement demonstrate that a treatment works. The report also attributes to Lopez a favorable comment about living longer and looking better through advances in medicine. That is his opinion, not clinical evidence of an anti-aging effect.
These procedures are not interchangeable
“Regenerative medicine” can refer to procedures using different biological materials and methods. Grouping them under “stem cell therapy” can obscure what a person is actually receiving.

The FDA’s approval statements concern use in the United States. They do not amount to oversight of a treatment performed in Mexico: the agency’s December 6, 2019 public safety alert explicitly cautions that it does not oversee treatments performed in other countries.
What risks regulators identify
The FDA lists serious potential harms associated with regenerative-medicine products that are illegally marketed, including blindness, tumor formation, neurological events, serious bacterial infections, reactions at collection or administration sites, unwanted inflammatory or immune responses, and cells moving to unintended locations, forming unintended tissue or growing excessively. It also warns about contamination with bacteria, viruses or mold, including inadequate infectious-disease testing, and the possibility that a patient may forgo an effective approved treatment.

These are hazards the FDA identifies—not a prediction that every patient will experience them, and not a quantified risk estimate for a specific clinic, product or procedure. The FDA’s July 22, 2020 consumer alert warns that some illegally marketed products have not been shown safe or effective and may pose significant safety issues.
The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia’s quick guide likewise describes serious events associated with unproven stem-cell treatments, including tumors and abnormal bone growth, as well as infection, allergic reaction and immune rejection. It also notes financial and opportunity costs, such as travel and possible diversion from conventional care. Neither source provides an incidence rate that would allow a reader to calculate the odds for an individual treatment.

What to ask before considering a treatment
For a treatment offered in the United States, the FDA advises patients to check whether the agency has reviewed it. For an investigational treatment, ask for the FDA-issued investigational new drug (IND) number when applicable, and read the clinical-trial consent materials closely. An IND number and consent process do not by themselves prove that a treatment is effective or risk-free.
- What exactly will be administered or done: stem cells, exosomes, NK cells, plasma exchange, or a plasma infusion?
- What condition is the procedure intended to treat, and what published clinical evidence supports that specific use?
- Is it an FDA-approved product for that use, or is it part of an FDA-reviewed clinical investigation? If an IND applies, what is the number and what does the consent form say?
- What are the known risks, how are the material and procedure screened for contamination, and who will manage complications?
- What established alternatives are available, and could pursuing this procedure delay effective care?
- What is the full cost, including travel and follow-up, and what is refundable if treatment is delayed or complications occur?
For treatment outside the United States, the FDA’s IND and approval framework should not be mistaken for foreign oversight. Ask which local regulator applies and verify the clinic’s claims and the practitioner’s credentials with the relevant authorities. The FDA’s checklist does not certify a clinic abroad.

Why plasma claims need separate scrutiny
Some anti-aging coverage discusses “young blood” or young-donor plasma alongside stem cells, but they are different interventions. In its February 19, 2019 warning, the FDA said young-donor plasma had no proven clinical benefit for preventing aging or memory loss; it also described infectious, allergic, respiratory and cardiovascular risks. The agency noted that establishments offered infusions for up to thousands of dollars per infusion. That figure concerns young-donor plasma, not stem-cell therapy and not Lopez’s reported treatment bill.
Likewise, the FDA’s December 6, 2019 exosome alert reported multiple serious adverse events among patients in Nebraska. It is a historical safety alert, not a current case count or evidence about every exosome product. FDA advises patients considering an investigational exosome treatment in the United States to ask about FDA review, request an applicable IND number, and understand the consent process and known risks.
