CBR vs VBR

CBR vs VBR for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Playlist

Use CBR for a pre-recorded playlist sent to YouTube Live through an encoder. VBR is YouTube’s recommendation for uploading a video file, a separate workflow.

For a pre-recorded playlist sent to YouTube Live through an encoder, use CBR (constant bitrate). YouTube’s published Live encoder settings specify CBR; its VBR recommendation applies to uploading a video file, which is a different delivery path. [YouTube Live encoder settings] [YouTube upload encoding settings]

Why the delivery path decides

CBR aims to keep the encoded stream’s bitrate steady over time. VBR varies bitrate with content complexity. A prerecorded source does not make an encoder feed into YouTube Live equivalent to uploading a video file: choose settings for the way the content reaches YouTube.

Delivery path YouTube’s published bitrate-mode guidance What to do
Encoder feed sent to YouTube Live CBR Use the Live ingest recommendation.
Video file uploaded to YouTube VBR Use the upload recommendations for the file-upload workflow, not as a replacement for Live ingest settings.

YouTube’s official guidance establishes the recommended Live setting; it does not publish a controlled CBR-versus-VBR comparison proving one mode produces better picture quality or bandwidth use across every encoder and playlist. The practical conclusion is to follow the published Live ingest guidance, not to assume a quality advantage beyond it.

Set up CBR for the Live feed

  1. Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube Live supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Select settings your encoder and source can actually output.
  2. Use the matching Live bitrate recommendation. YouTube publishes separate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for both 720p at 30 fps and 720p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not independent test results; consult its current table for other combinations and codec-specific minimums.
  3. Set bitrate encoding to CBR. Do not substitute the VBR setting from YouTube’s upload-encoding page: that page addresses a stored video file, not an encoder feed to Live.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  5. Choose supported audio settings. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio; available configurations can have codec-specific limitations, so check the Live settings page against your encoder’s audio output.
  6. Check outbound capacity and test. Make sure available upload bandwidth exceeds the total stream bitrate and leave about 20% spare capacity, as YouTube recommends. Run a test before relying on a continuous playlist, then monitor stream health.

YouTube automatically transcodes a Live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed to Live.

Keep the playlist running: encoder or cloud

YouTube describes software and standalone hardware encoders for creating a Live feed. A prerecorded playlist can be delivered through an encoder workflow; the right bitrate mode remains CBR regardless of whether playback is automated. YouTube’s encoder setup page also lists a cloud service for continuous prerecorded streaming as an optional workflow, not a requirement for choosing CBR.

Common setup problems

  • Using VBR because the source is a video file: the feed is still Live ingest if an encoder sends it to YouTube. Set CBR for that workflow.
  • Bitrate exceeds upload capacity: reduce the stream bitrate or improve the connection, while retaining roughly 20% headroom; then test again.
  • Wrong bitrate row selected: match the recommendation to the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. H.264 and AV1/H.265 guidance is not interchangeable.
  • Keyframe interval is too long: set two seconds where possible and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Unstable or unhealthy feed: test before the intended continuous run and use YouTube’s stream-health monitoring to identify ingest issues.
