YouTube Live provides a primary and a backup ingestion address, and its API describes sending the same program to both at the same time. To build a two-encoder setup for an internet radio station, route the station’s program audio into both encoders, configure each for its assigned YouTube destination, then test the real workflow—including a controlled interruption—before depending on it. Do not assume that two independent encoders will automatically fail over correctly without verification.
What YouTube’s primary and backup addresses do
YouTube Live’s API describes the backup ingestion address as an optional destination for a simultaneous second copy of content sent to the primary address. That gives you two ingest paths; it does not establish that every pair of independently operated encoder machines will switch over automatically if one fails. The result depends on the encoder equipment or software and its configuration. YouTube Live API documentation.
For radio, the encoders need the station’s program audio and an appropriate video presentation for the YouTube stream. YouTube’s general encoder instructions cover external audio/video hardware but do not prescribe a radio-specific static-image setup. A static image is therefore an option you may build into the video feed, not a requirement established by those instructions. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Prepare the channel and feed
- Confirm live access. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio in advance. YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Choose the video presentation. Decide what visual feed accompanies the station audio, and make sure both encoder paths carry the intended program content.
- Check the actual encoders. Confirm that each can accept the station’s audio/program feed, use the selected YouTube ingestion protocol, and send its output to the assigned destination. The precise controls differ by manufacturer and software.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential. Share it only with people who need it and enter it only in the intended encoder setup.
Configure the two encoder paths
- Create or select the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one for the broadcast. If live streaming has not previously been enabled for the channel, complete that step first.
- Copy the connection details. From the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, enter the URL in the server or RTMP server field and the key in the stream-key field. Follow the selected protocol’s corresponding fields if you are not using RTMP.
- Assign the primary encoder. Set its destination to the primary ingestion address provided for the stream.
- Assign the second encoder. Set its destination to the backup ingestion address, if the encoder or encoder workflow supports a second simultaneous output. YouTube’s API describes the backup as receiving a simultaneous copy of the same content.
- Match the program feed. Confirm that both paths carry the station’s intended program. Check that each device supports the chosen protocol and the settings you intend to use. There is no universal menu-by-menu procedure for independent encoder boxes in YouTube’s general documentation.
- Start and inspect the feed. Start the encoder output and watch the preview and stream status in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s standard workflow is to wait for the preview and then select Go live.
- Test before relying on redundancy. Run an off-air or private test of both paths. Interrupt the primary path in a controlled test and observe what actually happens in Live Control Room and on the receiving stream. Do not treat the presence of a backup address as proof of automatic failover.
Choose an implementation that fits the station

No particular encoder model is established here as supporting simultaneous dual output. Before buying hardware, check its manufacturer documentation for dual-output capability, supported protocol, and compatibility with the station’s audio/program feed.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
YouTube’s API distinguishes primary and backup ingestion addresses for supported protocols, including RTMP/RTMPS and HLS. Use the addresses supplied for the channel’s stream, and confirm that both encoders support the protocol you select. YouTube Live API documentation.
HLS settings to check
YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies a segment duration of 1 to 4 seconds, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. It also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. When an HLS stream key is selected, the backup server URL can be copied from Live Control Room. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

YouTube’s HLS API guide illustrates redundant ingestion with a primary URL using the a.upload.youtube.com hostname and copy=0, and a second copy using b.upload.youtube.com and copy=1. The copy parameter must differ between the primary and backup URLs to avoid corrupting the stream. These are protocol examples: use the actual URLs provided for your channel’s stream, not copied example addresses. YouTube’s HLS API guide.
Test and troubleshoot the setup
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the server URL and stream key were copied into the correct fields and that the encoder is using the intended protocol. Confirm that the device supports the address type you selected.
- The backup path does not appear to take over: Do not assume YouTube will automatically switch between independent encoders in every configuration. Verify whether the selected encoder workflow supports simultaneous primary and backup delivery, then observe the behavior in a controlled test.
- The stream appears corrupted with HLS: Confirm the primary and backup use the URLs supplied for the stream and that their
copyvalues differ where applicable. Check the HLS segment and playlist requirements against the encoder’s settings. - There is more delay than expected: YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. If latency matters to the broadcast, compare the supported protocol options in the encoders and choose accordingly.
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is sending to the selected stream and wait for Live Control Room’s preview/status before proceeding. For scheduled streams, use YouTube’s preview-then-Go live workflow.
