Orange-Osceola Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany classified the manner of death as an accident, according to WKMG News 6. The findings do not identify where each injury occurred or fully explain how it happened.
What the medical examiner reported
Stephany told WKMG that the autopsy found “multiple blunt impact injuries” and wrote, “The manner of death is accident.” These are two separate findings: the cause describes the injuries identified as causing death; the manner classifies the circumstances of the death. The Associated Press also reported that the examiner did not specify the locations of the injuries.
Zavala was found unresponsive after riding Stardust Racers on September 17, 2025. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead there. Local reporting said fire officials stated that he had not fallen from the coaster.
What is known about the ride and reported incident
WKMG reported that Stardust Racers reaches 62 mph (about 100 km/h), rises 133 feet and has 5,000 feet of track. Those are attraction specifications; they do not establish how Zavala was injured or what caused his death.

WKMG also reported that an incident report noted a preexisting spinal injury, but said it was unclear whether that condition contributed to his death. A later FOX 35 report summarizing the Orange County Sheriff’s Office incident report relayed the girlfriend’s account that Zavala struck his head during the ride, as well as accounts of a serious femur injury. Those details are attributed to the sheriff’s report as described by FOX 35; they are not the medical examiner’s stated cause of death.
What the findings do—and do not—establish
- The medical examiner’s reported cause was multiple blunt impact injuries, and the reported manner was accident.
- The published medical finding does not specify the location of each injury or provide a complete account of how the injuries occurred.
- The preexisting spinal injury was reported, but its role was described as unclear.
- FOX 35 reported that the sheriff’s incident report determined no criminal acts had occurred. The cited reporting does not establish that the ride malfunctioned or that Universal was negligent. An accident classification alone does not decide civil liability; the reviewed reports do not establish whether a civil case was later filed or resolved.
What happened to Stardust Racers afterward
When WKMG reported the death on September 18, 2025, Universal said the attraction remained closed and that it was cooperating with the investigation. FOX 35 later reported that Stardust Racers reopened on October 4, 2025. In that report, Universal Orlando President Karen Irwin said the company would update operational procedures and attraction signage to reinforce existing ride warnings and physical eligibility requirements at Stardust Racers and other rides. That is the attraction’s reported status at the time of the October coverage, not confirmation of its current operating status.
