In a November 2025 interview, CATS performers Gabriyel Thomas and Lucy Maunder shared different connections to Perth: Thomas embraced its beach culture, while Maunder recalled places she knew from studying at WAAPA. They also described their impressions of local theatre audiences during the show’s 2025 Australian 40th anniversary tour.
What Gabriyel Thomas said about Perth
Beach life between performances
Thomas, who played Grizabella, said she enjoyed spending time in Perth’s beach culture while the production was in town. “I’ve really enjoyed indulging in the beach life. I feel like I’m wearing a bathing suit every other day and I absolutely love it,” she told PerthNow.
Her impression of WA audiences
Thomas described Perth audiences as quieter than those in other Australian cities, but offered attentiveness as her explanation. “Perth audiences are much quieter than the other cities, but I believe it’s because they’re so tuned in to what’s happening on stage. Sometimes it’s so quiet out there you could hear a pin drop,” she said in the interview.
That is Thomas’s qualitative impression as a performer, not a measured comparison or audience statistic.

Where Lucy Maunder likes to go in Perth
Kings Park and Cottesloe
Maunder, who played Jellylorum, said returning to Perth felt nostalgic because she had studied at WAAPA. She singled out Kings Park for its views over the city and beaches, and Cottesloe for its coastal setting. “I love King’s Park and have spent many reflective moments looking over the Perth Skyline and also the beaches — I stayed in Cottesloe the last two times I toured here and it is just idyllic,” she told PerthNow.
Her view of Perth theatre audiences
Maunder praised local audiences’ enthusiasm for theatre and described how the Crown Theatre production brought performers close to patrons, including when they were offstage but still in character. “Perth audiences get around the shows so much here. It’s a big, cavernous space in the theatre but we spend a lot of time off the stage as cats accosting the audience and they just love it,” she said.

The 2025 Perth engagement—not a current listing
The interview appeared on 25 November 2025, while CATS was playing Crown Theatre Perth. The PerthNow report said the season ran through 6 December 2025, so it is a record of a completed engagement rather than a current show announcement. The cast enjoyed beach sunsets together, and a group trip to Rottnest was planned for December at the time; the interview does not establish that the trip took place.
The production was part of the Australian 40th anniversary tour. CATS adapts T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and features “Memory,” composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musical centres on the Jellicle Ball, where cats gather and one is chosen for a new life; see the Theatre Royal Sydney production page for the production’s synopsis and source-material context.
