The Butterball turkey video that drew boycott calls on TikTok in 2024 was described by PETA and contemporaneous news reports as footage from a 2006 undercover investigation—not newly filmed footage. PETA alleged that workers mistreated live turkeys at a Butterball slaughterhouse in Ozark, Arkansas. Butterball said the video was nearly 20 years old and did not reflect its later animal-welfare policies.
What did the PETA Butterball video show?
PETA recirculated footage it associated with its 2006 undercover investigation at a Butterball slaughterhouse in Ozark, Arkansas. In 2024, Scripps News and The Independent described PETA’s allegations that workers physically and sexually abused live turkeys. Those are allegations made by PETA; the resurfacing and news coverage do not establish that the footage documents current practices.
PETA says its undercover investigation lasted 40 days. The date and duration are PETA’s descriptions, not independent measures of what the footage shows. PETA’s account of the investigation provides its own presentation of the material.
Why did the footage trigger TikTok backlash?
When the old footage circulated again in November 2024, social media users called for a boycott. News coverage gave examples of TikTok posts, including people discussing returning a Butterball turkey. Those examples show a visible reaction, but they do not establish how many people participated or whether the controversy affected sales.

PETA vegan campaign project manager Amber Canavan urged people reconsidering turkey to “go out there and grab that vegan roast.” That was PETA’s advocacy recommendation, not a product endorsement or evidence about any particular roast’s quality or availability. The Independent’s 2024 coverage reported on the online reaction and Canavan’s comment.
How did Butterball respond?
Butterball said the video was “nearly 20 years ago,” predated the company becoming private and its engagement and certification through American Humane, and did not reflect the company’s current animal-welfare policies. The company also cited annual third-party audits, more than 200 science-based standards, and zero tolerance for mistreatment. These are statements Butterball made in 2024 as reported by Scripps News, not independently verified findings about its present practices. Scripps News’ report on Butterball’s response includes the company’s position.

Does certification settle the dispute?
No. Butterball pointed to its American Humane engagement and certification as part of its response. PETA, in a December 2024 article, argued that animal-welfare certifications do not ensure abuse is absent. That is PETA’s position; the available reporting does not independently resolve the disagreement or establish whether Butterball’s current certification and auditing arrangements have changed. PETA’s criticism of animal-welfare certifications explains its view.

Scripps News reported in 2024 that there was no active recall associated with the footage at that time. That historical report is not a current recall check, and the controversy itself should not be treated as evidence that a product is recalled.

- Known: the footage was described by PETA and 2024 reporting as connected to a 2006 investigation; PETA alleged mistreatment, and Butterball disputed the footage’s relevance to its later policies.
- Not established: the total number of TikTok participants, any measurable sales impact, current recall status, or a separate new wave of backlash in 2026.
