CD PROJEKT RED’s April 1, 2024, post about a floppy-disk edition of Cyberpunk 2077 was an April Fools joke, not a product announcement. The company’s fictional edition called for 97,619 3.5-inch diskettes and joked that installation would take about two months of nonstop swapping. TechSpot covered it that day, and Gematsu included it in an industry roundup; those reports document online circulation, but not a measured viral audience.
What CD PROJEKT RED announced
On April 1, 2024, CD PROJEKT RED posted the mock premise of “Cyberpunk 2077 on floppy diskettes!” The fictional limited edition supposedly required 97,619 3.5-inch diskettes. The post also joked that installing the game would take “about 2 months of non-stop diskette-swapping.” Both figures were part of the gag, not product specifications or the result of an installation test. Was the floppy-disk edition real?
No. In a follow-up explicitly headed “APRIL FOOLS!”, CD PROJEKT RED said, “Alas, this means no Cyberpunk 2077 on floppy disks.” The company directed people interested in playing the game to current platforms. CD PROJEKT RED’s follow-up
The follow-up also connected the joke to the company’s beginnings: “The story of CD PROJEKT RED began with distributing games on CDs.” That history supplied a company-specific twist to the retro-media premise. CD PROJEKT RED’s follow-up

How far did the joke spread?
TechSpot published same-day coverage, repeating the disk count and approximate installation estimate. Gematsu later included the post in its 2024 April Fools roundup. A public Reddit discussion also included a reader asking whether the game was being given away on floppy disks. Together, these examples show the joke circulated among gaming and technology audiences, but they do not establish its total views, impressions, or engagement. TechSpot · Gematsu · Reddit discussion
