Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales—often searched for as Kate Middleton—greeted President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle on 17 September 2025, the opening day of Trump’s second U.K. state visit. They welcomed the couple on King Charles III’s behalf in the Walled Rose Garden and accompanied them to meet the King and Queen Camilla; the monarchs then led the formal welcome and the day’s ceremonies.

Where and when did the Waleses welcome the Trumps?

The welcome took place at Windsor Castle on 17 September 2025. The Court Circular records that the Prince and Princess of Wales greeted the President and First Lady in the Walled Rose Garden on the King’s behalf, then walked with them to Victoria House, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla met the visitors. The Royal Family’s Court Circular and its account of the state visit document the sequence.

What happened during the formal welcome?

The King and Queen conducted the formal welcome outside Windsor Castle. A Royal Salute was fired from the castle’s East Lawn and at the Tower of London. The royal party then traveled through the Windsor estate in a carriage procession, accompanied by a Sovereign’s Escort from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Armed Forces members and three military bands lined the route.

A Guard of Honour with three State Colours

The Guard of Honour featured the State Colours of the Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards. The Royal Family described it as the first occasion on which three State Colours had appeared together; conventionally, one colour is on parade.

What else was on the first day’s programme?

After lunch with members of the Royal Family, the visitors viewed Royal Collection items relating to the United States. They visited St George’s Chapel, where they laid a wreath on Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb. Later, a Beating Retreat ceremony included a flypast by UK and US F-35 jets and the Red Arrows. The King hosted a state banquet in St George’s Hall, attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

At the banquet, King Charles described the occasion as reflecting “the enduring bond between our two great nations.” The Royal Family published the full text of the King’s speech.

How long was the state visit?

The Royal Family announced that the state visit would run from 17 to 19 September 2025, with the King hosting the President and First Lady at Windsor Castle. It was Trump’s second U.K. state visit; his first was hosted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019. The Royal Family’s advance announcement gives the overall visit dates. The official local visitor page describes the Windsor events as taking place on 17–18 September, distinguishing the castle portion from the full visit.

The second day at Windsor

On 18 September, the President and First Lady formally bid farewell to the King and Queen at Windsor Castle. The President then went to Chequers, while the Queen and First Lady toured Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and the Royal Library. Later, the First Lady joined the Princess of Wales at Frogmore Gardens for an engagement with Scouts’ Squirrels.
