Casio’s handheld sampler is real. First shown as a pre-production prototype at NAMM 2026, it launched in Japan on May 28, 2026, as the SXC-1. It combines 16 sample pads, a microphone, speaker, sequencing, effects, and selected SK-1 and MT-40 sounds. Casio’s confirmed launch information is Japan-specific; a U.S. or European release has not been confirmed.
From NAMM prototype to SXC-1
Casio displayed the sampler prototype at NAMM in January 2026. Early reports called it the SX-C1 or simply Casio’s new sampler. Casio’s April 21 Japanese announcement established the final name, SXC-1, opened reservations, and set the Japanese release for May 28, 2026. The official announcement lists an “open price,” rather than a fixed manufacturer MSRP. Casio’s launch announcement confirms the production model and its intended beginner-friendly focus.
The prototype’s retro-game association comes from its hardware: a grey handheld body, directional pad, four surrounding buttons, a small monochrome display, numbered 4×4 pads, and compact effect controls. “Game Boy-like” is a visual comparison, not a claim that the SXC-1 runs games or has a Nintendo, Sega, or other gaming-company license. The original prototype coverage is archived by KVR Audio.
What the SXC-1 does
Record, import, and play samples
The SXC-1 records WAV audio at 16-bit linear resolution and 48 kHz, with up to 15 minutes of sampling time. Sources include its built-in microphone, a 3.5 mm analog input, and USB Audio. The CASIO Sampler App can import WAV, FLAC, and MP3 files for transfer to the instrument. Sixteen pads are arranged in a 4×4 grid for triggering sounds.

Build patterns and sequences
Its sequencer provides 16 tracks, 16 steps, and patterns from one to eight bars, with both real-time and step input. Casio lists 50 sequence banks. Beat Sync is initially off and can adjust the tempo and timing of samples or sequences with different BPM values; Casio also describes it as a way to correct small timing discrepancies when pads are played. It should be understood as an approachable loop workflow, not as proof of a full digital-audio workstation or advanced time-stretching engine.
Add effects while performing
Two effect groups are built in. FX1 contains filter, flanger, phaser, and bit crusher. FX2 contains four roll effects and two delay types. These are hands-on performance effects, not a substitute for the depth of a software plug-in collection.

Use the phone app for management

Recording and performance can be done on the SXC-1 itself, but the phone becomes important for practical file management and deeper editing.

The SK-1 and MT-40 connection
Casio includes selected sounds associated with its SK-1 and MT-40 instruments. That gives the SXC-1 a recognizable 1980s Casio character, but it is not an SK-1 reissue. It is a new portable sampler that borrows particular vintage sounds rather than reproducing every function of either keyboard.
Portability has a battery caveat
The compact body can run from USB-C or four AAA cells. Casio estimates about two hours with four eneloop rechargeable batteries; alkaline batteries may last less, potentially an hour or less depending on use. That makes battery operation useful for short sessions or emergencies, rather than an all-day performance solution.

Availability and price
Reservations opened in Japan on April 21, 2026, and the Japanese release date was May 28. Casio’s announcement gives an open price. MusicRadar reported a Japanese preorder figure of approximately ¥39,930, but that is a market report, not a confirmed U.S. MSRP. The official pages located for the SXC-1 are Japan-specific, so buyers elsewhere should not assume local stock, warranty coverage, app support, or a domestic launch date.

Who is it for?
Good fit
- Beginners who want sampling, pads, and patterns without starting with a computer.
- Portable beatmakers who value a built-in microphone, speaker, and simple controls.
- Casio fans who want SK-1 and MT-40 sounds in a new instrument.
- Import buyers comfortable checking regional support, shipping, tax, and warranty terms.
Look elsewhere or wait if you need
- Long battery life, a large screen, or extensive hands-on audio editing.
- A conventional DAW replacement with deep arrangement and mixing tools.
- Confirmed local availability and support outside Japan.
- Independent assurance about pad feel, latency, sound quality, time-stretching, durability, or live reliability; those points are not established by Casio’s specifications alone.
How it compares with other compact samplers
| Instrument | Positioning | Most relevant difference |
|---|---|---|
| Casio SXC-1 | Beginner-oriented portable sampler | Built-in microphone and speaker, vintage Casio sounds, Beat Sync, and Japan-first availability |
| Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II | Compact sample-based songwriting and performance instrument | A more established international alternative for creative sample production; reported secondary pricing was $299 |
| Akai MPC Sample | Compact instrument in the MPC production ecosystem | A stronger candidate for deeper sequencing and MPC-style workflows; reported secondary pricing was $399 |
Those comparisons describe positioning, not tested superiority. The SXC-1’s clearest distinction is its simplified, self-contained approach and Casio sound heritage.
