Carsten Höller brought the Polaroid 20×24 into a setting built around play: at the 2024 London launch of Carsten Höller’s Book of Games, guests played games from the book and were photographed with the enormous instant camera. The camera’s scale made the portrait part of the occasion, not just a record of it.
What is the Polaroid 20×24?
The Polaroid Foundation describes the 20×24 as the world’s largest instant camera and runs a project that makes it available to selected artists for projects of their own conception. It is best understood here as a specialist artist-project instrument, rather than a camera offered as a standard consumer product. Polaroid Foundation’s 20×24 Project
Höller’s Book of Games launch at London’s ICA
On December 10, 2024, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London hosted the launch of Carsten Höller’s Book of Games. TASCHEN’s account says guests played games from the book and were photographed with the Polaroid 20×24. The combination is characteristic of Höller’s interest in situations that invite participation: guests were both players and subjects of a large-format instant portrait. TASCHEN’s event account
TASCHEN also describes the camera used at the event as one of only five in existence. That is the publisher’s reported count, not an independently verified inventory. TASCHEN’s event account

How the camera fits Höller’s wider projects
The ICA event is one documented instance of Höller using the 20×24; it should not be mistaken for a separately titled artwork called “The World’s Largest Instant Camera.” Another useful context is Janus, presented at Palazzo Diedo. The exhibition archive describes the Palazzo’s 20×24 Project as inviting participating artists to make original work with the camera. It gives the resulting prints’ dimensions as 20 × 24 inches (50 × 60 cm) and identifies John Reuter as the operator supporting artists. Palazzo Diedo exhibition archive
Gagosian’s notice provides further context for Janus as a Höller exhibition. The available accounts support a connection between Höller’s projects and the camera, but do not establish that every 20×24 Project print was made by Höller. Gagosian’s exhibition notice

The camera’s earlier giant-print history
The 20 × 24-inch print size documented for the Palazzo Diedo project is not the same as the dimensions described in a 2000 New Yorker feature on the camera’s earlier history. That article reported a 40-inch print width and prints as long as 106 inches. These historical figures refer to an earlier configuration and should not be conflated with the Palazzo project’s stated 20 × 24-inch prints.
