ABC News reported that Mike and Lauren Sorrentino acted together when their two-year-old son, Romeo, began choking during dinner. Mike picked him up and patted his back while Lauren retrieved an anti-choking device from a kitchen drawer and used it successfully, according to the report. ABC did not identify the device or establish its regulatory status.
What happened when Romeo Sorrentino choked?
Mike Sorrentino told ABC News that he reacted after hearing Romeo cough at dinner: “If I hear a cough during dinner, I assume it’s a problem. So I immediately jumped up,” he recalled to Good Morning America.
ABC’s account describes a joint response, not an intervention by Mike alone. He picked up Romeo and patted his back; Lauren retrieved an anti-choking device from a kitchen drawer and used it. The camera footage showed the device being used successfully, ABC reported. The story did not name the device, give its model, or establish whether it was authorized for marketing in the United States.
Mike described the moment as frightening, saying, “To be honest with you, I’ve tingles right now talking about it because everything was kind of textbook and we didn’t even know it.” He also praised Lauren: “We worked in synergy as a team and I couldn’t be prouder of my wife. I’m gonna break down. But she’s a superhero.” ABC reported that Romeo was doing “amazing” at the time of the interview. ABC News’ report

What should you do if a child is choking?
The recommended response depends on age. In the United States, American Red Cross guidance separates infants from older children and adults. For a person who is conscious but cannot cough, speak, or breathe effectively, follow the age-appropriate steps and call 911 when immediate emergency medical treatment is required.
For an infant
- Place the infant face-down along your forearm, supporting the head and jaw, with the head lower than the body. Give five back blows between the shoulder blades.
- Turn the infant face-up while keeping the head lower than the body. Give five chest thrusts using two fingers in the center of the chest.
- Repeat the sequence until the infant coughs or cries, or becomes unresponsive.
- If the infant becomes unresponsive, begin CPR according to your training. Check for a visible object when opening the airway; do not perform a blind finger sweep.

For an older child
For a conscious older child with severe choking, Red Cross guidance says to alternate five back blows and five abdominal thrusts. Continue until the obstruction clears or the child becomes unresponsive. If the child becomes unresponsive, begin CPR according to your training and check for a visible object. Do not blindly sweep the mouth. Follow the Red Cross child choking guidance.
Call for help and start with established steps
Call 911 when immediate emergency care is needed. If you are unsure what to do, emergency telecommunicators can help direct first-aid actions. What does the FDA say about anti-choking devices?
The FDA advises the public to follow established American Red Cross and American Heart Association protocols. Its safety communication describes potential problems with anti-choking devices, including failure to clear an obstruction, bruising, and throat scratches. Packaging, assembly, or use may also delay established rescue steps. As of March 4, 2026, the FDA said one anti-choking device was authorized for marketing and distribution in the United States; that count does not identify the device used by the Sorrentinos in 2024. Why get a child checked after a choking episode?
Even if a child cries or seems to recover, ABC News quoted board-certified pediatrician Dr. Jade Cobern recommending a medical exam after a choking event. “Crying after an event like this is a really good sign,” Cobern said, but cautioned that it does not mean the child is “out of the clear.” A medical provider can listen to the lungs and examine the child to assess whether further care is needed.

The Red Cross provides first-aid classes and training resources; hands-on instruction can help caregivers practice the steps and respond confidently.
