In Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson’s legacy is not about imitating Steve Rogers or matching his super-soldier abilities. It is about defining the Captain America role through Sam’s humanity and his ability to connect with people. The film puts that approach under pressure with an international crisis, a global plot and an ensemble of allies and political figures.
How does Sam Wilson become Captain America?
Sam has taken up the Captain America mantle, but the story treats that inheritance as a responsibility to define the role, not simply to wear its symbol. Producer Nate Moore describes Sam as the first Captain America who is not a super-soldier. Unlike Steve Rogers, Sam cannot rely on extraordinary strength or stamina; Moore says he must draw on his humanity and the way he connects with people to solve the film’s problems. Moore’s February 13, 2025 interview with The Walt Disney Company makes that contrast explicit.

That difference makes legacy a question of values and personal definition. Sam’s path is not presented as a copy of Steve’s, but as a distinct way to carry the title: relationships and understanding are central to his approach to heroism.
What makes Sam different from Steve Rogers?
| Point of comparison | Steve Rogers | Sam Wilson |
|---|---|---|
| Abilities highlighted by Moore | Super-soldier strength and stamina | Not a super-soldier; cannot rely on those same physical advantages |
| Strength emphasized in the film’s framing | Physical capacity | Humanity and connection with people |
This is a contrast in the qualities each brings to the role, not a claim that Sam has Steve’s abilities. The distinction also helps explain why the mantle can retain meaning without requiring its next bearer to share the original bearer’s powers.

- As he takes on the mantle of Captain America, Sam Wilson soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. In a race against time, Sam must unravel a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
How does the story put Sam’s values under pressure?
Disney’s official synopsis gives the conflict a political and international setting: after meeting newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam becomes caught in an international incident and must uncover a global plot. The premise places Sam’s approach to leadership amid high-stakes events, but the official description does not establish a specific real-world policy parallel.
Anthony Mackie has also emphasized that Sam should be seen beyond his previous place alongside the Avengers. In an interview published by Disney twenty-three on February 13, 2025, Mackie said viewers had previously seen how Sam was affected by Steve Rogers’s reality and how he fit into the Avengers’ lives, rather than Sam’s day-to-day life. He described the film as a chance to see Sam as a soldier and patriot outside that context. Read Mackie’s interview with Disney twenty-three.

Who is on Sam Wilson’s team?
The film features familiar allies and political figures, but Disney’s official synopsis describes an international incident and a global plot; it does not define a formal team roster. Disney’s page identifies Sam Wilson/Captain America, Joaquin Torres/Falcon and President Thaddeus Ross in its image captions. Those captions identify characters, not membership in a named squad.
The credited cast includes Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson and Harrison Ford. The available official descriptions do not assign every cast member a specific team function, so it is more accurate to describe the story as an ensemble around Sam than to present an unsupported roster.
