If YouTube videos will not play, first find out whether the problem is one video, one device, or your whole connection. Try another video, open YouTube in a private window, and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Each result narrows the cause before you clear data or reinstall anything.
Start with three tests to isolate the problem
- Try another video. If other videos play, the original may be private, removed, age-restricted, region-limited, or available only to members or purchasers.
- Try a private or incognito window. If YouTube works there, an extension, stored site data, or a browser setting is a likely cause.
- Try another network or device. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test YouTube on another device. If it works on cellular but not Wi-Fi, investigate the router, DNS filtering, VPN, parental controls, or school/work network. Mobile data may use a limited allowance or incur charges.
Also check whether other websites and services work. YouTube acknowledges that service interruptions can happen, but an individual playback failure does not establish that YouTube is down. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends changing networks and trying another supported device when playback continues to fail (YouTube playback troubleshooting; YouTube error and playback guidance).

Try low-risk fixes first
After the isolation tests, refresh the page or close and reopen the app. Restart the browser or device, then check for browser, YouTube app, operating-system, or TV firmware updates. YouTube recommends restarting, updating, and testing another device as part of its general playback troubleshooting (YouTube playback troubleshooting).

Keep fixes reversible at first. Test a private window, change networks, and disable extensions temporarily before clearing data. Clearing browser cookies can sign you out and remove site preferences; clearing an app’s storage or data may reset its settings and sign-in state.

Fix buffering and slow playback
Buffering can result from a slow or unstable connection, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, other household traffic, a quality setting your connection cannot sustain, or a temporary routing or service problem. YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed recommendations are shown below; they are not guarantees, because latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi reliability, and competing traffic also matter (YouTube playback guidance).

- Lower the video quality temporarily using the player’s settings.
- Pause other downloads or streams, then test again.
- Run a speed test while the buffering is happening; a result at another time may not reflect current congestion.
- Try the same video over mobile data. If it plays there, investigate the Wi-Fi or network path.
- If other services are slow too, restarting the router may help distinguish a local connection problem from a YouTube-specific one.
For more detail, YouTube’s “Stats for nerds” overlay can expose playback diagnostics. It is optional; most viewers can identify the likely category with the tests above.
Fix errors in a computer browser
Check extensions and private browsing
If the video works in a private window, return to the normal window and disable extensions one at a time, starting with ad blockers and privacy or script-blocking tools. Retest after each change. YouTube identifies ad blockers, extensions, and some DNS changes as possible contributors to playback errors, but disabling a blocker is a diagnostic test, not a requirement for every viewer. If the blocker is responsible, you can review its settings or allow YouTube rather than leaving protections disabled everywhere (YouTube error guidance).

Update the browser and clear only what is needed
Use a current compatible browser. YouTube names Chrome, Firefox, and Safari among compatible browsers; older browsers may still play videos but can have trouble with newer features, and Internet Explorer is no longer supported (YouTube browser compatibility information).
If updating and testing extensions do not help, clear cached files and, if needed, YouTube or Google cookies through the browser’s privacy or history settings. Menu names differ by browser. Clearing cookies can sign you out, so try clearing site-specific data when your browser offers that option. Then reopen YouTube and sign in if prompted.
Try hardware acceleration only if the picture is black or unstable
A graphics-driver or hardware-acceleration interaction can affect video rendering. As an advanced test, toggle hardware acceleration in the browser’s settings and restart the browser; the location and label vary by browser and version. If it makes no difference, restore the original setting. Video-format support also varies by device and browser, so a higher-quality format may not be available everywhere (YouTube video quality and device support).

Fix problems in the YouTube mobile app
- Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and retry.
- Update YouTube from the device’s app store, then restart the device.
- If using mobile data, check that YouTube is allowed to use it in the device’s settings.
- On Android, open Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → YouTube → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Clear cache removes temporary files; clearing storage or data can reset the app and sign-in state.
- On iPhone or iPad, force-close and reopen the app, update it, and restart the device. If the problem persists, delete and reinstall YouTube; the available app-management controls vary by iOS version.
- Test YouTube in a browser or on another device to see whether the issue is limited to the app.
YouTube recommends restarting the app or device, updating the app and device software, and reinstalling when appropriate (YouTube playback troubleshooting).
Fix YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device
- Close and reopen the YouTube app, then restart the TV or streaming device.
- For a full power cycle, unplug the device, wait at least 30 seconds, and reconnect it.
- Check for YouTube app updates and device or TV firmware updates. The menus differ among manufacturers.
- Confirm the device has an internet connection and test YouTube on another device using the same network.
- If a TV is connected to an external receiver or display, check that the selected input and audio/video connections are working.
YouTube specifically recommends unplugging a TV or streaming device for at least 30 seconds and checking for app updates (YouTube playback guidance).
When only one video will not play
A “Video unavailable” message does not necessarily mean there is a fault on your device. The uploader may have deleted the video or made it private; access may be limited by country, age, membership, purchase, or account status. Some formats may also be unavailable on a particular device. Ordinary troubleshooting cannot remove an intentional content restriction.

- Open the video directly on YouTube rather than inside an article, forum, or other embedded player.
- Try another video from the same channel to distinguish a single-video issue from a broader playback problem.
- Sign in if the content requires an account, then check whether the account is eligible for that video.
- Compare another device or network if the message could reflect a device or regional difference.
Embedded videos have additional context and access limits. Age-restricted videos generally cannot be watched on most third-party websites, and an embedded player opened without the expected webpage context can produce error 153 (YouTube embedded-player guidance).

Age-restricted videos generally require a signed-in viewer who meets YouTube’s age requirements; YouTube has described some such content as requiring an account confirming the viewer is 18 or older (YouTube information on age restrictions). If you are an eligible adult who is blocked, sign in, check that your account details are correct through Google’s official account process, and open the video directly on YouTube.

A parent, school, employer, library, family-safety product, router, ISP, or DNS service may also filter videos. Clues include YouTube working on cellular but not a particular Wi-Fi network, multiple devices showing the same limitation, or Restricted Mode being locked by an administrator. If the account or network is managed, ask the parent or network administrator for help; do not try to bypass its controls.

What common playback symptoms suggest
“Something went wrong,” “An error has occurred,” or “Playback error. Tap to retry”
Refresh, reopen the browser or app, restart the device, and update the software. If the problem persists, test a private window, disable extensions temporarily, and check for problematic DNS or filtering settings. YouTube lists outdated browsers, cache or cookie problems, ad blockers, DNS changes, and sign-in status among possible playback-error factors (YouTube error guidance).
“Connection to server lost” or repeated loading
Test another network and lower playback quality. If other services are also slow, focus on the connection; if only YouTube fails across devices and networks, a YouTube-side problem becomes more plausible, though the message alone cannot confirm an outage.
Black or green video, frozen picture, or no sound
For a black or green player, update the browser or app, test another browser or device, and consider extensions, graphics drivers, hardware acceleration, video-format support, or an HDMI/display connection. For no sound, check the player mute control, device and browser volume, selected operating-system output, TV/receiver input, and Bluetooth speakers or headphones. YouTube recommends checking device/browser sound settings and restarting when audio is missing (YouTube playback guidance).
If YouTube still will not play
Record the exact error message, whether one or all videos fail, your device and operating-system version, browser or app version, and whether the video works on another network or device. These details help distinguish an account, device, network, or video-specific problem.
After the basic tests, send feedback in YouTube using Profile picture → Help and feedback → Send feedback. Labels can vary by platform. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends sending feedback from the app after a playback failure (YouTube playback troubleshooting).
Reinstalling an app or resetting network settings should come after simpler tests, not before: these steps can remove saved settings or require you to sign in again. A VPN or DNS change is not a general fix; it may alter routing, reduce speed, or create new account and regional issues. YouTube Premium is not a cure for connection failures, software faults, incompatible devices, or content restrictions.
