Yes. YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it identifies a movie trailer, it may show a placeholder and warn you to stop; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A separate copyright removal request can remove the stream and give the channel a copyright strike. Repeating a trailer does not, by itself, make its use permitted or fair use.
What YouTube can do while the stream is live
YouTube says all livestreams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such material, the platform may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the streamer. If the content stays in the stream, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate it. These are possible enforcement steps, not a prediction that every trailer loop will be detected.
A warning or interruption is not automatically the same thing as a copyright strike. The result depends on what YouTube identifies and whether a rights holder also submits a valid copyright removal request. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Content ID claims, live interruptions, and copyright strikes are different
- Live matching and interruption: YouTube may act during the broadcast if its systems identify third-party content that remains in the stream.
- Content ID claim on an archived stream: YouTube says claims on an archived livestream are made after the stream ends, if the creator archives it. A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike.
- Copyright removal request: This is a legal request from a copyright owner or authorized representative. If YouTube finds the request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike.
If an active livestream is removed for copyright, YouTube says the channel receives a strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. A further strike can extend the restriction to 14 days. Strikes may expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed; three active strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination. These are YouTube policy periods, not estimates of the likelihood of enforcement. Details are in YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance.

Does looping a trailer count as fair use?
Not automatically. In the United States, fair use is assessed case by case using four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the work’s potential market. Courts—not YouTube’s automated matching system—decide fair-use cases. YouTube says transformative uses are more likely to qualify, but the outcome depends on the facts.
Simply replaying a trailer without adding commentary or other new expression does not itself establish fair use. That is a practical inference from the factors, not a court ruling about every trailer loop. Other countries have different exceptions, which may be limited to uses such as quotation, criticism, review, parody, or pastiche. YouTube’s fair-use guidance explains the US framework and the limits of automated decisions.

What permission would you need?
The trailer’s title alone does not tell you who controls its rights or whether you have permission. Any license would need to cover the actual use—including livestreaming, territory, duration, and the trailer elements involved. Permission for some other use, or permission from a party that does not control all relevant rights, may not cover the stream.
Even with a license, YouTube says a stream may be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Contact the relevant rights holder and ask them to allowlist the channel. Allowlisting helps address automated matching, but a license does not guarantee that YouTube’s systems will recognize your permission. See YouTube’s information about Content ID matching on live streams.

YouTube’s Content ID eligibility rules say reference material must be content for which the owner controls exclusive rights and note that trailers may not be exclusive to an individual. That rule concerns who can submit reference material to Content ID; it does not mean trailers are uncopyrighted or free to stream. See YouTube’s Content ID eligibility requirements.
What to do if YouTube warns you or stops the stream
- If a warning or placeholder appears, stop or remove the identified material. YouTube says addressing the issue may allow the stream to continue. Do not assume the stream is safe to resume with the same trailer.
- Check YouTube Studio and the notice you received. Identify whether the event was a live-stream warning or interruption, a claim on an archived broadcast, or a copyright removal request. The terms matter: not every match or warning is a strike.
- If you have a license, review its scope and contact the rights holder. Confirm livestreaming and territory are covered, and ask about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
- If you receive a scheduled removal request, act within the stated period. YouTube says the uploader has seven days to act before the removal and strike take effect. Options include deleting the content during that period or seeking a retraction. A counter notification is available after removal takes effect and a strike is applied. Read YouTube’s removal-request guidance.
- Use a counter notification only if you have a good-faith basis. YouTube describes it as an option when you believe the removal was mistaken or the use qualifies for an exception. Consider qualified legal advice if the consequences are significant.
What cannot be determined from the title alone
Without knowing the specific trailer, rights holder, country, license, and how the stream uses the trailer, it is not possible to determine whether a particular loop is licensed or legally protected. Nor do YouTube’s published procedures establish whether a particular stream will be matched or whether a rights holder will make a removal request. The platform’s copyright overview describes permission and exceptions, but an individual outcome depends on the facts.
