Yes. The most dependable way to watch Netflix on a plane, train, or in a place without reliable internet is to download eligible shows or movies before you leave. You can stream only when the flight or destination provides a usable internet connection, and Netflix does not guarantee that airline Wi-Fi supports video. Keep offline downloads as your backup, and remember that licensing can prevent a download from playing after you cross a border.
What you need to watch Netflix while traveling
Netflix viewing on a trip comes down to two different methods:
- Offline playback: Download eligible titles in the Netflix app while you are online, then open the Downloads section without an internet connection.
- Streaming: Play a title over the internet during the flight or at your destination. This depends on the connection, the airline’s policies and equipment, and Netflix access in that location.
Netflix’s service overview says: “Depending on your plan, you can also download TV shows and movies to your Android phone or tablet, iPhone, iPad, or Google Chromebook device and watch without an internet connection.” A download is therefore the practical answer for a flight where you cannot count on Wi-Fi. It is not a guarantee that every title will remain playable in every country.
How to download Netflix before departure
- Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Open the Netflix app before leaving home, your hotel, or another place with dependable internet. Downloads can consume substantial data, so avoid starting them over a mobile connection unless your plan allows it.
- Choose a title with a download option. Open a movie or episode and select the download icon. If there is no download icon, Netflix says that title cannot be downloaded. Availability differs by title and can change.
- Download a series episode by episode, or use the season option when shown. Netflix may provide a control to download an entire season. Check that the episodes you actually want are selected.
- Wait for completion. Leave the app open long enough for the download to finish, particularly when saving several high-resolution episodes.
- Verify the files in Downloads. Open the Netflix menu and select Downloads. Confirm that the titles appear there and can start playing before you leave the internet connection.
- Stay signed in. Netflix requires offline access while you remain signed in to the app. Do not sign out or uninstall the app after preparing your downloads.
- Check storage and battery plans. Keep enough free storage for the files and bring the charging cable, adapter, or power bank that fits your device and travel restrictions.
Some downloads expire, and some titles have limits on how often they can be downloaded. The app displays the relevant status; check it immediately before the trip instead of assuming a file will remain available indefinitely.

Which devices support Netflix downloads?
Netflix lists these download-capable device categories:
| Device | Download support and conditions | Travel considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Supported in the Netflix app for eligible titles. | Portable and usually easy to charge; available storage and screen size depend on the model. |
| iPhone or iPad | Supported in the Netflix app for eligible titles. | An iPad provides a larger screen than a phone, while an iPhone is easier to carry. |
| Amazon Fire tablet | Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance requires Fire OS 7 or later for downloading. | Verify the specific model and software version before buying or relying on it. |
| Chromebook with Google Play Store | Supported when the Chromebook can run the Android Netflix app through Google Play. | Check that Google Play is available and that local storage is sufficient. |
| Windows device | Netflix’s download troubleshooting guidance says Windows devices do not support downloads. | Use a supported phone, tablet, Fire tablet, or Chromebook instead if offline viewing is essential. |
You do not need to purchase a tablet if you already own a supported phone or tablet. A dedicated travel screen is an optional convenience, not a Netflix requirement. If you are considering an Amazon Fire tablet, confirm both the exact model and its Fire OS version before purchase; the stated Fire OS 7 requirement applies to Netflix downloading guidance, not to every feature on every device.
Can you stream Netflix using airplane Wi-Fi?
Possibly, but you should treat it as a bonus rather than your travel plan. Streaming requires an active internet connection, and an airline may restrict video, offer different service tiers, or have a connection that is too slow or intermittent for continuous playback. Netflix’s published information does not promise that airline Wi-Fi will stream video and does not establish availability or pricing for any particular carrier or route.

Before boarding, check the airline’s information for your exact flight or route. Look for four details:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Whether Wi-Fi is offered on that aircraft and route.
- Whether the available tier permits video streaming rather than only messaging or web browsing.
- Whether access is free, paid, or limited to certain passengers.
- How the service handles takeoff, landing, international segments, and periods when the aircraft changes networks.
Even when video is technically allowed, congestion can cause buffering. A completed Netflix download avoids that dependency. Keep streaming as an option for titles you could not download or for watching after the aircraft reaches a stable connection.
Will Netflix downloads work in another country?
Not necessarily. Netflix says that its catalog, maturity ratings, audio and subtitle choices, and access to current downloads can vary by country. Its travel guidance states: “Choices for streaming and downloading (including audio/subtitle options) vary by country.” A title downloaded in one country can therefore become unavailable when you arrive somewhere else because the title is licensed differently there.

Netflix says its service is available in more than 190 countries and regions, but the library changes by location and over time. The Help Center identifies China, Crimea, North Korea, Russia, and Syria as locations where Netflix is unavailable. Availability in more than 190 countries does not mean that every title is available in all of them.
If a download shows “not available in your area”
Netflix says this error means the title is not currently licensed in the country you are visiting. You can keep or delete the download, but to use that title again you should reconnect in a country where it is available. Do not assume that repeatedly restarting the app will remove a regional licensing restriction.
How to prepare for an international trip
- Download more than one viewing option, especially if a particular movie or series is important to you.
- Verify the files in Downloads before departure.
- Expect the catalog and language options to differ after crossing a border.
- Use the local Netflix catalog for new streaming choices once you have a permitted connection.

These are US page figures checked on that date, not worldwide prices. Netflix says prices, package eligibility, add-ons, extra-member terms, and taxes can vary. Confirm the current price and download-device allowance for your country and account before subscribing or changing plans. The device limit concerns how many supported devices can hold downloads under the plan; it does not mean every title can be saved or that one title will play in every destination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a travel setup
The right setup depends on what you already own and how much you value screen size. Compare the practical factors rather than buying a device solely for Netflix:
| Option | Advantages | Checks before the trip |
|---|---|---|
| Existing phone | Most portable and already integrated with your charging kit. | Free storage, battery capacity, comfortable viewing size, and app sign-in. |
| Existing tablet | Larger screen for long flights and shared viewing. | Netflix app support, download storage, protective case, and a way to recharge. |
| Fire tablet | Can provide a dedicated travel screen when the model runs Fire OS 7 or later. | Exact model, operating-system version, storage, battery, and Netflix app compatibility. |
| Chromebook with Google Play | Larger display and keyboard in a compact computer form. | Google Play Store availability, local storage, battery life, and Netflix app support. |
| Windows laptop | Useful for other travel work. | Do not rely on it for Netflix offline downloads; Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance says Windows devices do not support them. |
For any option, compare storage capacity, battery endurance, charging access, portability, and the number of devices permitted by your plan. A larger screen is useful only if the device can hold the downloads and stay powered for the journey.

What can prevent a download from playing?
The title has no download icon
The title is not eligible for download on that device or under the current Netflix offering. Choose another title; there is no setting that makes an ineligible title downloadable.
The download disappeared or expired
Some downloads have expiration rules, and certain titles limit how often they may be downloaded. Reconnect to the internet, open Downloads, and read the status shown for that title. If Netflix permits another download, save it again while online.
The app will not play anything offline
- Confirm that you are still signed in.
- Open Downloads and check that the file completed rather than remaining in progress.
- Check the device’s free storage and operating-system requirements.
- Reconnect briefly so Netflix can refresh the download status, then try playback again.
The device is unsupported
Move the download to a supported Android or Apple mobile device, a Fire tablet running Fire OS 7 or later, or a Chromebook with Google Play Store. Windows devices are not a supported offline-download option according to Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance.
The title is blocked after arrival
A “not available in your area” message points to regional licensing, not necessarily a damaged file. Keep or delete the download as you prefer, then reconnect in a country where the title is available if you want to watch it again.
A practical pre-flight checklist
- Install or update the Netflix app on a supported device.
- Sign in and confirm the correct profile.
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Download several eligible titles, not only one.
- Open Downloads and verify that every planned title appears.
- Check expiration notices and any download-frequency restriction.
- Free enough storage for the files.
- Charge the device and pack the appropriate cable or adapter.
- Keep the app installed and signed in.
- If crossing a border, expect catalog changes and retain backup titles.
- Check the airline’s route-specific Wi-Fi information, but do not depend on it for video.
Bottom line
Download eligible Netflix titles to a supported, signed-in device before you leave reliable internet. That is the dependable way to watch on a plane or anywhere without a connection. Streaming may work when travel Wi-Fi permits it, but airline service is route-specific and not guaranteed for video. International travelers should also plan for licensing changes: a download made at home can be unavailable in another country.
