No—not once your Netflix membership has actually ended. Downloads are temporary offline access through the Netflix app, not permanent movie files. If you cancel while your paid period is still active, you can normally keep using Netflix, including eligible downloads, until the service end date. After the account closes, Netflix says stored downloads are deleted; if you restart your membership, you’ll need to download titles again.
Canceling is not always the same as losing access
A cancellation request normally stops the next renewal; it does not necessarily switch off Netflix straight away. If you have time remaining in your current billing period, you can generally continue watching until that period ends. Check the end date shown in your account, and use your own account’s date rather than assuming the cancellation takes effect immediately. Netflix’s cancellation guidance explains the usual timing and exceptions, while its payment-history instructions can help you check billing details.

Timing can differ if your account is on hold or billed through a third party. A gift-card or promotional balance may also extend the period in which your membership remains usable. During a membership pause, Netflix says you cannot stream or download. Treat the membership status and end date shown for your account as decisive.

While the membership remains active, a download may play if it has not expired, the title is still available under Netflix’s licensing rules, and you can use the Netflix app on the device where you downloaded it. Netflix’s download guidance says downloads are available on the device used to download them and that you must remain signed in.

When a canceled membership actually closes, do not expect the downloaded movies to remain playable. Netflix’s localized help guidance says cancellation deletes downloads stored on the device and that, after restarting membership, you must download the content again. The wording of help pages can vary by country or language, but the practical point is the same: a Netflix download is not a purchased copy you keep after your subscription ends.
Having a title stored on your phone or tablet does not by itself preserve access. The supported playback route is through Netflix’s app and Downloads section—not by treating the download as an ordinary video file to copy or move. Avoid deleting the app, clearing its storage, resetting the device, or switching devices if you still need the downloads during your active membership; those actions can jeopardize access to locally stored content.

Can you watch a download on the last day?
Usually, yes, if your account is still active and the title’s download remains valid. Open the Netflix app, choose Downloads, select the movie or episode, then choose Play. Keep the device signed in. Do not wait until after the membership end date to test it, and do not assume playback is guaranteed up to the exact minute service expires: the app may need to validate your account or the title.
Downloads can expire before your membership does
There is no single expiration period for every Netflix download. Netflix says titles expire after a certain amount of time, and the app indicates the status of an individual download. Licensing can also make a movie unavailable while your membership is still active. Netflix’s download-expiration guidance says titles that are no longer available cannot be renewed or downloaded again; its licensing explanation describes why titles leave the service.

If a download is marked Expired, Netflix’s documented recovery steps are to open Downloads, select and delete the expired item, then return to the title and download it again if that option is available. If the movie has left Netflix, or a title-specific download limit has been reached, redownloading may not be possible. Netflix may require you to stream while connected instead.

What if you restart Netflix later?
Restarting your membership can restore access to Netflix, and some account information may be retained for a limited period. That does not mean your old offline files are restored. Netflix says you need to download content again after restarting. The movie must also still be available in your region and downloadable under the current title and plan rules. Download limits depend on plan and market
Download allowances are separate from whether a canceled account can play downloads. Netflix’s current Help Center lists a limit of 15 total downloads per device per calendar month on ad-supported plans, resetting on the first day of each month; ad-free plans may allow up to 100 active downloads per device, depending on plan and device allowances. Some titles also have annual download limits. These figures and plan features can vary by country and change, so check the current Netflix guidance for your account: ad-supported download limits and title-specific limits.

If you need the movie after Netflix ends
- Keep Netflix active through the trip or offline-viewing period. Downloads remain conditional on the account, title availability, and app access.
- Restart Netflix when you need it. Redownload the title if it remains available.
- Rent or buy the specific movie from a digital retailer if it is offered in your country. Check that retailer’s rental window, download support, device compatibility, and account terms; access is governed by that platform.
- Consider physical media if independent, durable access matters and you have compatible playback hardware.
None of these options guarantees availability on every device or in every country. Avoid unofficial downloaders, converters, or screen-recording tools: they are not Netflix-supported ways to retain access and may create terms, copyright, or security problems.
