Short answer: You should not give another person your Spotify username and password. If you live together, share the subscription through Premium Duo or Premium Family, where each person uses a separate Spotify account. People at different addresses should use separate plans or Spotify Free.
Why sharing one Spotify login causes problems
Spotify’s U.S. End User Agreement says usernames and passwords are for personal use and should be kept confidential: Spotify End User Agreement. Its privacy policy also warns that anyone with account access may see personal data and use account controls: Spotify Privacy Policy.

A shared login is one profile, not two listeners. Playlists, liked songs, listening history, recommendations, queues and settings can become mixed. Either person could also change the password, email address, payment details or other controls, and the account holder remains responsible for activity performed with those credentials.
Spotify does not need to promise a particular simultaneous-device limit for the practical answer to be clear: a single shared profile cannot provide two independent listening experiences or reliable privacy.

The supported way to share Premium
Spotify’s household subscriptions put several independent accounts on one bill. The plan manager pays and sends invitations; each member accepts with an existing or newly created Spotify account. Saved music, playlists and recommendations stay with that person’s account instead of being merged.
| Situation | Appropriate option | Accounts | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| One person | Premium Individual | 1 | No shared membership |
| Two people living together | Premium Duo | 2 | Same residential address |
| Household of up to six | Premium Family | Up to 6 | Eligible members at the same address |
| Eligible college student | Premium Student | 1 | Student verification |
| Friends living separately | Separate Individual accounts or Spotify Free | Separate | Duo and Family are not designed for this arrangement |
Plan names, prices and availability vary by country, billing channel, promotion and account eligibility. Check Spotify’s current plan page before paying: Spotify Premium plans.
Premium Duo: two separate accounts in one household
Who qualifies
Duo is for two people who live together. Spotify verifies the shared address, and each person then uses an individual Premium account anywhere: Duo support.
U.S. price snapshot
On August 16, 2026, Spotify’s U.S. page displayed $18.99 per month for two Premium accounts. The figure is a dated U.S. snapshot; taxes, promotions, regional prices and third-party billing can change the amount.

How to set up Duo
- The manager signs in and opens Spotify’s subscription or Premium-plan page.
- Select Premium Duo, enter the manager’s residential address and payment method, and complete checkout.
- From the account or plan-management page, send the invitation to the second person.
- The invitee opens the invitation while signed in to the intended Spotify account.
- The invitee accepts, enters the same home address and confirms it.
Accept the invitation with the account that owns the desired playlists and recommendations. Joining with a different login does not automatically move that content.
Duo limitations
- The plan manager cannot be changed after the plan is created, according to Spotify’s support instructions.
- Spotify’s paid-subscription terms limit how often a member can leave and join another household plan; a 12-month restriction can apply.
- If the manager cancels or loses Premium, members generally retain their Spotify accounts but lose Premium access and revert to Free after the applicable billing process.
- Where audiobook time is included, Spotify identifies it as the manager’s benefit rather than a pool shared equally by both members.
Premium Family: up to six household accounts
Who qualifies
Family supports the manager plus up to five additional accounts—six Premium accounts total—for eligible members living at the same address. Each member receives a separate login: Premium Family.
U.S. price snapshot
Spotify’s U.S. page displayed $21.99 per month on August 16, 2026. Treat that as a dated price signal, not a permanent or worldwide rate.
How Family works
- The manager selects Premium Family, enters the household address and adds payment details.
- The manager invites each eligible person from the Family-management page.
- Each invitee signs in to their own account, accepts the invitation and enters the same address.
- The manager handles invitations, removals, billing and, where available, parental or managed-account controls.
Spotify’s Family terms require members to reside at the same address. Family marketing uses family language, but the enforceable eligibility issue is the household-address requirement; do not assume a relative living elsewhere qualifies.

Do Duo and Family members have to live together?
Yes. Spotify may request address verification when someone joins, when the manager changes the address, when the supplied address cannot be confirmed, or during later re-verification: Spotify address-verification help.
If verification fails
- Use the member’s real residential address, with the country matching the plan and payment method.
- Respond to a re-verification request within the stated seven-day window.
- If verification is not completed, Spotify says the member can lose household-plan access and switch to Spotify Free.
- Spotify’s current U.S. help guidance says a failed verification may also prevent joining another Family or Duo plan for 12 months from the failure date, although rejoining the same plan may be permitted.
If the address search cannot find the exact entry, enter the full address and try the building, street or a nearby public place suggested by Spotify. Do not substitute an address where the member does not live. Spotify says this check verifies the address and does not track a member’s location for that purpose.
Can two people listen at the same time?
Yes, on Duo or Family: each member streams from their own account, device, queue, history and recommendations. That independent-account design is the reason to use a household plan rather than one shared login.
Two people may appear to use one login on multiple devices, but they would still be controlling the same profile. Their queues and recommendations can interfere, and account privacy is lost. Spotify does not present shared credentials as the supported solution.

Can friends share Spotify Premium?
Friends can share playlists, songs and listening features without sharing credentials. They should not use Duo or Family merely to split a bill when they live at different addresses. Spotify’s household terms allow it to request verification and to suspend or terminate access when eligibility is not met.
Roommates may meet the same-address condition, but confirm the wording and eligibility shown for the specific plan and country rather than assuming every roommate arrangement qualifies. Separated parents and long-distance couples do not qualify solely because they are related or partnered. A student living away from home may find Premium Student more appropriate if eligible.
Share music without sharing an account
- Send a public or private playlist link.
- Use collaborative playlists when you want others to add or edit tracks.
- Share artist, album, song and podcast links.
- Create a Blend playlist or use Jam and other supported group-listening features.
- Use Spotify Connect to control playback on an appropriate device without disclosing a password.
A playlist or song link shares content, not the account that created it.

The invitation opens the wrong account
- Sign out of Spotify.
- Open the invitation again.
- Choose the intended account, using Spotify’s change-account option if shown.
- Only then confirm the household address.
The address cannot be found
Enter the complete residential address, then try the building, street or a nearby public place offered by Spotify. Ensure the plan country and payment-method country match. Never use another person’s address.

A member fails re-verification
Check the email request and submit the full address within seven days. Losing access generally changes that account to Spotify Free; do not repeatedly move it among unrelated household plans because the 12-month restrictions can apply.
The manager cancels
Invited accounts normally remain Spotify accounts while Premium access ends or reverts to Free. Cancellation does not mean every account is deleted.
A member already has Premium
Switching into Duo or Family can alter the existing subscription immediately. Spotify’s paid-subscription terms warn that unused paid time or promotional trial time may not be refunded, so review the account’s billing details before accepting.
The household moves
A changed address can trigger verification for members. Update the plan details honestly and be prepared to re-verify; temporary travel after qualifying is different from claiming a residence where nobody lives.
Which option costs less?
The following calculation uses Spotify’s displayed U.S. prices on August 16, 2026: Individual $12.99, Duo $18.99 and Family $21.99. Taxes, promotions, regional pricing and third-party billing are excluded.
| Arrangement | Monthly total | Approximate cost per person |
|---|---|---|
| Two Individual plans | $25.98 | $12.99 |
| Duo (two eligible household members) | $18.99 | $9.50 |
| Six Individual plans | $77.94 | $12.99 |
| Family (all six places used) | $21.99 | $3.67 |
The lower per-person figure matters only when every participant meets the household rules. A group at different addresses should not treat these plans as an officially supported discount.
Decision guide
- Choose Duo for exactly two people at the same address who want independent accounts.
- Choose Family for a qualifying household of up to six that can use the member slots and accepts one manager’s billing responsibility.
- Choose separate Individual plans when people live apart, need independent billing or do not want address verification.
- Choose Student when one eligible student can pass Spotify’s verification.
- Choose Free when separate accounts are needed but Premium features are not worth the cost or household eligibility does not fit.
Bottom line
Do not share one Spotify password. For people who genuinely live together, Duo or Family provides separate accounts, simultaneous independent listening and preserved personalization under one subscription. For different households, use separate plans or Spotify Free; sharing a plan outside Spotify’s eligibility rules risks verification failure and loss of access.
