Yes—but only on LG models that include Timeshift, Time Machine, Live Playback, or a similar DVR feature. You also need a live broadcast entering the TV’s own digital tuner and compatible USB storage. A USB port, webOS, or the ability to play videos from a flash drive does not by itself mean the television can pause live programming.
LG uses different names and rules by model, year, webOS version, and country. Verify your exact model before buying a drive or following a menu path.
First, check whether your LG supports live-TV pause
- Find the model number in Settings → Support → TV Information, on the rear label, or in your purchase paperwork. Labels vary by webOS version.
- Open the model’s manual or LG support page and search for Timeshift, Time Machine, Live Playback, or DVR.
- Confirm that the manual describes recording or pausing from the TV’s internal tuner. Do not infer support from a USB media-player feature.
LG’s regional support documentation identifies model-specific differences, including some 2021 webOS 6.0 televisions without Time Machine. Current U.S. product pages for 2025–2026 models do not establish universal Timeshift support, so the model manual remains the authority.
What LG calls the feature
| Term | How it is used |
|---|---|
| Timeshift | Common name for pausing, rewinding, and resuming live television. |
| Time Machine | Older or region-specific LG name for recording and live playback. |
| Live Playback | Label used in some manuals for the temporary live-TV buffer. |
| Time Machine II | Name found on some older or regional models. |
| DVR | May describe the USB recording system rather than a specific pause button. |
Search all four feature names in your exact manual because LG’s terminology is not consistent across generations.

What you need
- An LG model whose documentation explicitly supports one of the features above.
- A digital broadcast received through the TV’s RF/antenna input. LG’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance says Time Machine recordings are available for digital broadcasts and that copy-protected programs cannot be recorded: LG’s Time Machine troubleshooting page.
- Dedicated USB storage accepted by that model. LG’s current U.S. Timeshift page recommends an external hard disk of 80 GB or more with at least 2.3 GB free; that is U.S. guidance, not a universal minimum. Other LG manuals specify different thresholds, including 4 GB or more: LG Timeshift guidance and a model-specific LG example.
- The original or compatible LG remote with pause, play, rewind, and live controls.
LG’s general USB advice—intended for ordinary USB media use, not a Timeshift guarantee—mentions USB memory up to 32 GB or external storage up to 2 TB, FAT32 or NTFS, and external-drive power requirements of 5 V/500 mA or lower. Follow the Timeshift specification in your own manual first: LG’s USB-device guidance.
Set up Timeshift and pause live TV
- Back up the USB drive. Initialization can erase every file.
- Turn the television off.
- Connect the storage device. LG’s current U.S. instructions specifically describe connecting an external hard disk to the rear USB port while the TV is off: LG’s Timeshift setup instructions.
- Turn the TV on and select the live-TV tuner. Choose the antenna/RF source, not HDMI or a streaming app.
- Initialize the drive if prompted. On different models this may read Initialize USB, Format for DVR, Time Machine, or Timeshift. Accept only after confirming that the drive contains no needed data.
- Enable Timeshift. The control may be in the live-TV toolbar, a recording menu, or a Magic Remote shortcut. Menu names vary.
- Press Pause. The picture stops while the TV continues buffering the broadcast to USB.
- Resume or rewind. Press Play, use rewind, or select an earlier point on the on-screen progress bar. LG specifically documents selecting a point on the bar with the AI/Magic Remote.
- Return to live. Press the live/forward control or move to the end of the bar. The buffer is temporary unless your model separately saves a recording.
What can the TV pause?
| Source | Expected result | What to use if it does not work |
|---|---|---|
| Digital antenna channel through the LG tuner | Supported on compatible models. | Check model support, USB initialization, and signal quality. |
| Built-in streaming app | LG tuner Timeshift normally does not control it. | Use the app’s own controls, if available. |
| Cable box through HDMI | Do not assume LG Timeshift can pause it. Some older documentation describes broader input support, while newer guidance emphasizes digital broadcasts. | Use the cable box’s DVR or pause function. |
| Satellite receiver through HDMI | Not a guaranteed LG Timeshift source. | Use the receiver’s DVR. |
| Game console, Blu-ray player, or streaming stick | LG’s tuner buffer does not control the device. | Use that device’s pause or recording feature. |
| Copy-protected broadcast | Recording may be blocked. | There is no TV setting that overrides the protection. |
Because LG manuals conflict across regions and generations about external inputs, treat the exact model documentation as decisive rather than assuming HDMI support.

Important USB and recording warnings
Initialization is destructive. LG manuals explain that DVR initialization erases existing files and can convert the drive to a proprietary format. Recordings may play only on the original television and can become unusable if the TV’s internal video hardware is replaced. Do not expect the drive to work normally on a computer or another LG TV. See LG’s manuals for the storage and initialization behavior: LG manual example 1 and LG manual example 2.
Use a dedicated, reliable drive and safely eject it whenever the television provides an eject command. A USB flash drive may work on a model that permits it, but sustained-write performance, capacity, partitions, and available USB power are model-dependent.

Why Timeshift is missing or fails
The model does not include the feature
Entry-level, region-specific, or app-focused models may omit it. A USB port cannot add Timeshift. Confirm the manual; a software update should not be expected to create a feature LG does not list.
You are watching the wrong source
Switch to a digital channel received by the internal tuner. HDMI receivers and streaming apps generally require their own pause or DVR controls.

The drive is unsuitable or uninitialized
- Free space is below the model’s requirement.
- The capacity, partition, file system, or sustained write speed is unsupported.
- A USB-powered hard disk exceeds what the port can reliably supply.
- Another USB device is being selected as the recording target.
- The drive or its partition is damaged.
Disconnect other USB devices, back up the drive, initialize it through the TV, and test again. Do not reuse a drive containing irreplaceable files.
The antenna signal is weak
LG manuals warn that weak reception can make Timeshift and recording unreliable. Recheck coaxial connections and antenna placement, rescan channels, test another digital station, and view the TV’s signal-strength diagnostic before blaming the storage device. An antenna can improve reception, but it cannot add DVR support.

- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
The temporary buffer was discarded
LG’s troubleshooting guidance says the buffer can disappear after switching inputs or channels, turning the TV off, opening certain apps, running Auto Channel, changing modes, or starting another recording or media operation. Timeshift is a rolling buffer, not automatically a permanent archive.

If the exact LG model lacks Timeshift, or you want scheduled recordings, commercial skipping, multi-tuner use, or viewing across devices, use equipment designed for that job:
- Tablo for an over-the-air DVR with a compatible network/TV setup.
- SiliconDust HDHomeRun for networked tuner access and DVR software.
- Channel Master DVR for a traditional antenna DVR.
- Your cable or satellite provider’s DVR when the television signal comes through a set-top box.
For antenna reception, Antennas Direct and Mohu offer antenna options, but an antenna supplies a signal only; it does not provide pausing or recording by itself. For compatible LG models, official storage options can be reviewed from Western Digital’s My Passport page or SanDisk’s USB-drive page; compatibility and power still must be checked against the TV manual.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Confirm the exact model, region, year, and webOS version.
- Find Timeshift, Time Machine, Live Playback, or DVR in the manual.
- Use the TV’s internal digital tuner and a suitable antenna signal.
