YouTube supports age-restricting a livestream itself in YouTube Studio. If you mean that an existing video on your channel is age-restricted, YouTube’s published livestream eligibility rules do not say that one such upload automatically prevents you from going live. Check your channel’s live access separately: restrictions, strikes, or a significant number of videos with features disabled can affect it.
Two different questions, two clear answers
An existing upload on your channel is age-restricted
YouTube’s eligibility guidance does not identify one age-restricted upload by itself as an automatic livestreaming disqualification. It does say that a significant number of videos with features disabled may affect livestream access. An age-restricted video alone and a broader channel restriction are not the same thing, so check your channel status if you cannot start a stream. YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance and guidance on livestreaming restrictions describe the relevant conditions.
You want to age-restrict the livestream
You can apply an 18+ audience restriction during livestream setup. That setting controls viewer access; it does not exempt the stream from YouTube’s other rules or eligibility requirements. YouTube’s age-restriction instructions cover the setting.
How to age-restrict a livestream in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.
- Enter the stream details and set its audience.
- Select Age restriction (advanced), then Yes, restrict my videos to viewers over 18.
- Continue through setup and start the livestream.
YouTube documents the same 18+ option for livestream setup in its age-restriction instructions. If you meant an existing upload rather than a live stream, use the separate video-editing controls: in Studio, open Content, select the video, choose Edit, then Audience, and set Age restriction (advanced) to restrict viewers to over 18.

What you need before you can go live
Setting an age gate does not unlock livestreaming for a channel that is ineligible. YouTube’s current Help guidance, checked October 3, 2026, says creators need a verified channel, no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and must be at least 16 years old. These are platform requirements, not statistical findings. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements for the current details.
All content in a livestream must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube may age-restrict or remove a stream, and it can restrict a creator’s livestreaming ability. Applying an age restriction is not permission to broadcast content that violates policy.

How age restriction affects viewers
- Viewers under 18 and viewers signed out of YouTube cannot watch age-restricted videos, including streams subject to the restriction.
- Age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party embedded sites; viewers are directed to YouTube.
- Viewers in Australia, the EU, EEA, Switzerland, and the UK may be asked to verify their age.
These access conditions are described in YouTube’s age-restricted content guidance and its age-verification guidance. The regional verification note applies to the listed locations, not necessarily every viewer.
If YouTube will not let you start a livestream
Look at the channel’s live access and enforcement status rather than assuming the age-restricted upload is the cause. YouTube identifies several possible issues:

- A livestreaming restriction is active: YouTube says a livestream strike can prevent streaming for 14 days. Review the channel’s notices and follow the appeal or resolution steps available in Studio.
- A policy strike or stream takedown affects the channel: YouTube lists Community Guidelines enforcement and streams taken down for policy reasons among circumstances that may limit live access.
- A live broadcast matches copyrighted material: YouTube identifies copyright matches to another live broadcast as a possible reason for restricted functionality. Check any notices and resolve the underlying rights issue; an age gate does not change copyright obligations.
- Many videos have features disabled: YouTube says a significant number of videos with features disabled may also affect livestream access. Check Studio for channel or video notices.
- The channel does not meet basic eligibility: Confirm verification, age eligibility, and the absence of a restriction in the preceding 90 days against YouTube’s current requirements.
YouTube also says a channel with a livestreaming restriction cannot get around it by streaming through another channel. See the restriction guidance rather than attempting to route around an enforcement action.
