Unlisted is a visibility setting for an individual stream; it does not remove YouTube’s channel requirements. A hidden channel is different: YouTube disables it and its content is not viewable until you restore it.
Unlisted stream vs. hidden channel: what is the difference?
“Unlisted” describes who can find or access a particular video or live stream. “Hidden” describes the state of the channel itself. They are not interchangeable, and making a stream unlisted does not make an ineligible channel eligible.

YouTube distinguishes unlisted and private videos in its privacy settings guidance. An unlisted link is not a confidentiality control: recipients can pass it on.
Who is eligible to live stream on YouTube?
YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements are that the creator is at least 16, the channel is verified, and the channel has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

These conditions apply whether you intend to stream publicly, privately, or unlisted. Visibility determines access and discovery after the channel is eligible; it does not override age, verification, or restriction requirements.
Mobile streaming has an extra threshold
For a live stream created on a mobile device, YouTube additionally requires at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported device. First-time mobile activation can take up to 24 hours. The 50-subscriber threshold is specific to mobile live streaming; it is not a general requirement for webcam or encoder streams. If your channel is hidden, restore it first
A hidden channel cannot be treated as an active channel with an unlisted stream. YouTube says a hidden channel and its content are disabled and not viewable to others. Restore the channel before trying to use its features.
- Sign in to the Google account associated with the hidden channel.
- Use YouTube’s Re-enable hidden channel flow. YouTube describes this as using the “create a channel” restoration flow while signed in.
- If it is a Brand Account, select the hidden channel when prompted and confirm restoration.
- After the channel is visible again, check its live-stream eligibility and create the stream. YouTube notes that view counts can take up to one week to update after restoration; that delay concerns displayed counts, not a stated waiting period for live-stream eligibility.
Check a restriction before changing visibility or equipment
If live streaming is restricted, switching the stream to unlisted will not lift the restriction. YouTube also says a creator may not use another channel to get around an active live-stream restriction. Check the restriction status and follow the applicable notice or appeal process rather than trying another channel. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and restrictions.

A webcam, encoder, microphone, or other production gear changes how you make a stream, not whether the channel is eligible. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder methods; a webcam is relevant if you choose its computer-based webcam workflow, while encoder setups can use production equipment. Buying equipment cannot restore a hidden channel or remove a restriction. YouTube’s overview of method choices is in its live-streaming tips.
Choose a visibility setting for the stream
Once the channel is eligible and active, create the stream using YouTube’s chosen workflow and set visibility according to the audience you intend to reach. You can review the available stream controls in Manage live stream settings.

- Choose unlisted when you want access limited to people who receive the URL, while accepting that they can reshare it.
- Choose private when access should be limited to you and the people you select for private sharing.
- Choose public when you want viewers to find the stream through public channel listings or search.
