YouTube Live Streaming Limit: What Happens After 12 Hours?

YouTube’s 12-hour guidance concerns whether a stream is archived and how far viewers can rewind—not a documented automatic cutoff for going live.

YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a 12-hour cutoff that automatically ends a live broadcast. It does warn that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and viewers’ ability to rewind may be limited or unavailable. If your event is scheduled to run longer than 12 hours, treat broadcast continuity and saving the recording as separate concerns: prepare your encoder carefully and make a local recording.

Does YouTube stop a live stream after 12 hours?

YouTube’s Help pages describe what can happen to the archive and DVR after 12 hours; they do not say that a scheduled broadcast is automatically terminated at that point. Nor do these pages establish the maximum time a stream can remain live. So 12 hours is a documented archive and playback threshold, not a verified hard cutoff for going live. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Will YouTube save a long live stream?

YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but this is not a guarantee that every stream will be captured or processed successfully. For a stream exceeding 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, do not depend on the YouTube archive alone; record locally as a backup. YouTube’s encoder instructions also describe automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours.

Can viewers rewind a 24-hour YouTube live stream?

Not necessarily for the entire broadcast. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to rewind through the full event. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions can have lower DVR limits, according to the DVR help page.

How to prepare a stream scheduled for more than 12 hours

  1. Schedule it in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains scheduling a stream in Live Control Room. Confirm the scheduled start and audience-facing details well before the event.
  2. Set up and test the encoder early. YouTube recommends setting it up at least two hours ahead. Check that the selected video, audio, and output settings are correct for your production.
  3. Start the encoder before the advertised start. YouTube recommends starting at least 15 minutes in advance. Check the preview in Live Control Room and confirm the stream is reaching YouTube before you begin the program.
  4. Monitor stream quality during the event. Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube’s stream status rather than assuming that a scheduled event is continuing normally.
  5. Record locally and verify the file is growing. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Check during the broadcast that recording is active and the file is increasing in size. Choose storage capacity based on your encoder settings and planned duration; YouTube does not specify a universal capacity or recording format in the streaming tips.

A local recording reduces reliance on the YouTube archive, but it is not a guarantee against a failed encoder, full or disconnected storage, power loss, network trouble, or software problems. For critical events, account for those risks in your recording and monitoring setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the uploaded material as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a camera-based live production, and it does not change YouTube’s archive or DVR behavior for streams over 12 hours.
