The old activation steps are useful as a record of how the promotion worked, not as current instructions.
What was Google Maps’ Mario Time?
For MAR10 Day, Google announced a collaboration with Nintendo called Mario Time on March 9, 2018. It was a temporary feature for driving navigation: Mario replaced the usual navigation arrow on the map. Google said the rollout was global and would last one week. Google’s announcement is the source for those details.

How users enabled Mario Time in 2018
- Update the Google Maps app through Google Play on Android or the App Store on iOS.
- Open Maps and tap the yellow question-mark icon at the bottom right.
- When prompted, enable Mario Time. The navigation arrow then changed to Mario during driving navigation.
These steps describe the 2018 promotion. Google’s announcement does not establish that the yellow question-mark control or Mario Time is present in current versions of Maps, so don’t treat the old steps as a working method today.
What to do if you’re checking the app now
You can check the current Google Maps app for an official Mario Time prompt, but the 2018 post is not evidence that one should appear. If there is no prompt, the announcement offers no alternative way to activate the feature. No physical product was part of Google’s stated setup instructions.

Drive safely
Google’s announcement included a reminder from Maps UX Engineer Munish Dabas: “Just remember to practice safe driving on the road—we don’t encourage throwing bananas or red shells at other drivers in real life!” Set up navigation before driving; don’t handle your phone while the vehicle is moving.
