Spotify announced in May 2025 that U.S. iPhone users could see audiobook prices and buy individual titles and extra listening hours in the app. But Spotify’s current U.S. audiobook FAQ says individual titles are bought in the Web Player, and its support page says plan and top-up payments are web-only. The current iPhone checkout path is therefore unclear from Spotify’s published guidance; check the purchase screen in your account before relying on in-app checkout.
What Spotify announced for iPhone
On May 19, 2025, Spotify said Apple had approved an update that let users in the United States see audiobook pricing and buy individual audiobooks or additional “Top Up” listening hours through the iPhone experience. Spotify said the change followed the U.S. court ruling in Epic Games v. Apple, which it said enabled clearer pricing and purchase links. Where to pay now depends on what you’re buying
Spotify’s published instructions do not give one consistent checkout path for every audiobook transaction. Its current U.S. FAQ says individual audiobook purchases are made in the Spotify Web Player, then listened to in the app. Spotify’s support page says payments for the Audiobooks Access plan and extra listening hours are web-only. Because Spotify’s May 2025 announcement and current U.S. FAQ describe different paths for individual-title checkout, the FAQ is not enough to establish whether direct iPhone checkout remains available in September 2026. Look for a price and purchase option on the title page in your app; if it is not offered, use the Web Player as directed by Spotify’s current FAQ. Availability may also depend on your country and account.

Why audiobook prices or purchase options may be missing
- You are outside the United States. Spotify’s May 2025 iPhone announcement was limited to U.S. users. The available sources do not establish the same in-app purchase feature in other markets.
- You are viewing a plan or top-up option. Spotify currently says those payments are web-only, even though its 2025 iPhone update described top-up purchases through the iPhone experience.
- You are following older purchase instructions. Spotify’s 2022 launch instructions sent listeners who found locked titles in the app to a web page to buy them, then back to the app to listen. Spotify’s 2022 audiobook launch announcement
- Your plan or country may not include the same access. Audiobook access varies by plan and market; Spotify says Audiobooks Access is available in the U.S. with 15 hours monthly.
How Spotify audiobook hours work
The 15-hour monthly allowance applies to Spotify Premium audiobook listening in the U.S. and to the U.S.-only Audiobooks Access plan, according to Spotify’s current support information. The Audiobooks Access plan’s unused hours expire at the end of each month. Do not assume that rule applies to purchased top-up hours: the cited support guidance does not specify their expiry. In May 2025, Spotify announced that U.S. iPhone users could see prices and make purchases through the iPhone experience, citing the U.S. court ruling in Epic Games v. Apple. Spotify’s current FAQ again directs individual-title buyers to the Web Player. Those dated statements explain the shift, but do not settle the current iPhone checkout status.
