Usually, no—not for a video you publish. A Spotify subscription lets you listen to music under Spotify’s terms; it does not give you permission to synchronize a track with video and distribute the result. For a YouTube upload, social post, documentary, podcast, client project, or advertisement, use a license that expressly covers your intended use.
What Spotify access does—and does not—allow
Spotify’s U.S. Terms of Use grant limited access for personal, non-commercial use. They say Spotify content is licensed rather than sold and prohibit redistribution or transfer of the service or its content. The terms do not grant synchronization rights—the permission to pair music with visual images. See Spotify’s U.S. Terms of Use.
Spotify Premium does not change that. Premium features may include offline listening, but an offline track in the Spotify app is not a general-purpose audio file or a video-use license. Importing a recording into Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, or iMovie—or capturing it while filming—does not create the missing rights.
Spotify’s developer rules separately prohibit synchronizing recordings from the Spotify Platform with visual media such as videos, films, slideshows, and advertising. A link or embed is a different kind of experience from exporting the recording into a video; neither should be treated as a substitute for a video license. See the Spotify Developer Policy.

Why a released song can need several permissions
A commercial song commonly involves more than one set of rights. Depending on the project and distribution, permission may be needed for:
- The sound recording (master): the particular recorded performance.
- The musical composition: the underlying music and lyrics, typically controlled by songwriters or publishers.
- Synchronization: pairing the composition and recording with moving or still images.
- Performance or platform uses: additional permissions that can depend on territory, service, and distribution method.
Buying a song, owning a CD, subscribing to a streaming service, or naming the artist does not automatically clear these rights. For a documentary or other substantial production, confirm which rights the license covers rather than assuming one permission covers every layer.

Does the answer change by video or destination?

Not monetizing a public video does not by itself make the use permitted. The wider the distribution—and the more the music contributes to a public, sponsored, or commercial project—the less defensible it is to rely on a personal listening subscription. Local law can affect particular private-use questions.

- “I only used a few seconds.” There is no universal five-, ten-, or 30-second safe harbor. A permitted short use must come from a license or a legal exception that actually applies. YouTube Creator Music, for example, has track-specific terms; it is not a general short-clip exception. See YouTube Creator Music’s usage rules.
- “I gave the artist credit.” Credit may be required by a particular license, but it does not replace permission. “I do not own this music” is not a license.
- “It is background music, and I am not making money.” Background use is still synchronization. Non-monetized posting does not automatically authorize it.
- “I changed the pitch, speed, or volume.” Altering the audio does not grant rights to use the underlying recording or composition.
- “I recorded it from a speaker or phone.” A microphone, camera, or screen recording changes how the audio was captured, not the rights needed to distribute a video containing it.
- “No one has claimed it yet.” The absence of an automated claim is not proof of authorization; a rights holder may act later.
- “It says royalty-free or copyright-free.” Those labels are not a complete license. Check the actual terms for permitted platforms, commercial use, attribution, territory, term, client publication, and content type.
Fair use is not a routine workaround. In the United States it is a fact-specific legal analysis; short duration, credit, education, lack of profit, voice-over, or a pitch change does not settle it. For a high-value film, campaign, client project, or takedown dispute, consult a qualified copyright attorney.
Where to get music cleared for video
YouTube Audio Library
For a YouTube-first project, the Audio Library in YouTube Studio offers production music and sound effects that YouTube identifies as copyright-safe for use under its stated terms. Some tracks require attribution; others do not. Eligible YouTube Partner Programme creators can monetize videos using Audio Library tracks under those conditions. Do not assume that YouTube’s assurance extends to other platforms or uses outside YouTube. See YouTube’s Audio Library guidance.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Audio Library in the left menu.
- Search or filter by title, artist, keyword, genre, mood, attribution requirement, or duration, then preview a track.
- Check the track’s license and attribution requirement before downloading the MP3.
- If attribution is required, copy the supplied credit into the video description; retain the track and license details with your project records.
YouTube Creator Music
Creator Music offers track-specific licensing or revenue-sharing options, not a general-purpose license for a song heard on Spotify. YouTube describes availability as limited to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Programme, with expansion outside the U.S. pending. Usage terms vary by track. Paid licenses generally cover one use in one published long-form YouTube video and are not transferable to other platforms or channels; the cited rules do not make Creator Music a general solution for Shorts or live streams. Music libraries for recurring creator and client work
Subscription libraries can be practical when a project needs music across multiple videos, but plans differ by commercial status, platform, channel, client, term, and content type. The following are plan distinctions described by the providers; verify the live license before choosing because terms and availability can change.

- Epidemic Sound: Its Creator Plan is intended for non-commercial creator content; its Pro Plan is intended for freelancers, businesses, and organizations producing commercial or client work. It also lists single-track and enterprise licensing options. The provider says certain platform workflows, including TikTok’s in-app music use, may limit track duration, and it distinguishes original video use from music-first content such as lyric videos, playlists, and compilations. Review the Creator Plan, Pro Plan, and licensing options before publishing.
- Artlist: Its Social license is for personal creators and does not cover commercial or client work; its Pro license is described for commercial, branded, advertising, film, and client video projects. Artlist describes its music and sound-effects plans as synchronization licenses for video, not standalone audio licenses. Review Artlist’s plan and license explanation.
A library license can still prohibit music-first uploads, standalone audio, or uses outside the plan. For instance, Epidemic Sound says its music is intended to enhance original productions, not serve as the main attraction in lyric videos, compilations, playlists, or minimal-visual listening content; Artlist likewise excludes standalone audio use under its described synchronization model. Read the applicable provider terms: Epidemic Sound on compilations and music-listening content and Artlist’s plan terms.
Direct clearance for a specific song
If the production needs a recognizable song—especially for a documentary, film, campaign, advertisement, or high-value client project—contact the parties authorized to license the particular recording and composition, such as the label or master owner and the publisher or other composition rights holder. One party may not control both. Get written terms covering the exact track and version, platforms, territory, duration, edits, monetization, advertising, and client or publisher rights. No standard price applies; cost and timing depend on the song and scope.

Choose the license before editing
Before building a video around a track, verify each of these points in the actual license:
- Destination: YouTube only, or also TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, a website, podcast platforms, television, or other outlets?
- Use and revenue: Personal, monetized, sponsored, branded, paid advertising, business, or client work?
- Account coverage: Which channels or accounts must be registered, and may a client publish the finished video on its own account?
- Scope: Territory, license term, renewal, and whether an already-published video remains covered after a subscription ends.
- Content type and edits: Are documentaries, cuts, loops, stems, alternate versions, or music-first formats permitted?
- Attribution and claims: Is credit required? Is channel safelisting or a claim-clearance process available?
- Standalone audio: Does the license forbid distributing or offering the track apart from the video?
Save the license certificate or terms, invoice, track title and artist, version, covered accounts and platforms, territory, duration, attribution wording, and any clearance correspondence. A platform-native music library may have separate limits for account type, territory, feature, duration, commercial use, and reposting; permission within one app should not be assumed to cover an exported file or another service.

What to do if a video receives a copyright claim
- Read the notice. Identify the claimant, track, claimed segment, affected territory, and consequence—such as revenue sharing, a block, or muting.
- Trace the audio source. Determine whether it came from Spotify, a licensed library, direct clearance, or a platform-native tool, and whether the video’s use matches that permission.
- If you lack a matching license, use the platform’s available options to remove, mute, replace, or trim the music. Do not assume credit or a brief excerpt will resolve the claim.
- If you are licensed, locate the certificate, invoice, track details, and proof that the relevant channel, platform, project type, and publication date are covered. Follow the provider’s clearance or dispute process.
- Dispute only with a genuine basis. A claim is not automatically proof of infringement, but a dispute should rest on an applicable license or a sound legal basis. Seek advice from a qualified copyright attorney for a serious takedown, strike, or commercially important project.
YouTube notes that music outside its known-safe Audio Library may create copyright problems and points creators to the Audio Library and Creator Music for suitable longer-video uses. The outcome of an upload is not guaranteed: depending on the rights holder, platform, territory, track, account, and use, a video may be identified, monetized by a rights holder, muted, blocked, removed, or subject to a strike or takedown process.
