Reconnection after internet returns is not the same as automatic recovery from a Wirecast crash, computer restart, or power failure. Treat the computer, network, encoder, YouTube event, and recording as one system that needs testing and a recovery plan.
What Wirecast’s reconnect behavior does—and does not—tell you
YouTube lists Wirecast among its verified encoders. That listing confirms it is recognized as an encoder, not that YouTube or Telestream guarantees continuous service or unattended recovery. YouTube’s encoder directory does list CamStreamer for Axis cameras as supporting automated 24/7 continuous and scheduled streams; that is a distinct camera-based option, not proof that Wirecast has the same capability.
Telestream’s version history says that Wirecast 13.1.2, released April 23, 2020, fixed a problem with losing internet connectivity and stated: “Wirecast no longer hangs when losing Internet connection, and it will automatically reconnect after the Internet connection is restored.” This documents a reconnect behavior for an internet interruption. It does not establish recovery from every outage, automatic restart after an application or operating-system crash, recovery after power loss, or a supported maximum continuous runtime. Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.4, released September 16, 2026, as its current public version; it also lists a YouTube-destination authentication fix in version 16.5.1. What to plan for before going live
Confirm the channel and event are eligible
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days to livestream. Set up the event and encoder ahead of time, then confirm the event is visible in Live Control Room and available from the channel or watch page. YouTube’s livestreaming getting-started guidance

Give the connection upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving capacity above the stream’s total bitrate; its streaming tips recommend 20% headroom. Shared network traffic can reduce the upload available to Wirecast, and a connection disruption can interrupt the stream. Test on the same network and with the same audio and motion as the intended programme. YouTube streaming tips
Choose encoder settings the connection can sustain
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, its recommended video bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain the upper end: choose a bitrate that leaves the recommended headroom on your tested upload. Run a failover rehearsal and watch the output
YouTube advises testing the complete stream before the real event, monitoring audio and video quality, and testing backup-encoder rollover—for example, by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection. Verify that the intended backup takes over and that viewers can still access the event. If you record locally, check that the archive file is valid and continues to grow. What a 24/7 stream means for YouTube archives and DVR
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise a complete automatic archive for a stream that runs 24 hours or longer, so do not rely on YouTube alone when a full recording matters. Plan a separate local recording and verify its file growth and integrity. The guidance does not establish that streams over 12 hours are never archived, either. YouTube encoder guidance

YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need to rewind or catch up, explain that limitation and consider whether continuous streaming is the right event format. YouTube DVR guidance
Separate YouTube event controls from computer recovery
YouTube’s encoder-stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. Those settings govern how the event responds to the encoder; they do not demonstrate that Wirecast or the computer will relaunch after a crash, reboot, or power failure. YouTube stream settings

For a Wirecast setup, plan how someone will notice and address failures outside the internet-reconnect case. The official materials reviewed do not establish a supported maximum runtime or an automatic application-restart guarantee. Continuous operation therefore calls for monitoring, backup plans, and a decision about who can intervene if the encoder or machine stops.
