Sometimes. Viewers can skip an ad only when YouTube serves a skippable format; YouTube’s general ad guidance says those ads can be skipped after five seconds. Other ads are non-skippable, and some viewers may not receive an ad at all. YouTube does not describe a separate skip rule for 24/7 streams, so stream duration alone is not known to change the experience.
What happens when an ad appears on a live stream?
YouTube Help says that viewers who see an ad on a live stream return to the stream when the ad ends or when they choose to skip it. The skip option depends on the ad format: YouTube’s advertising-format guidance says skippable video ads can be skipped after five seconds, while non-skippable ads must be watched before the video can be viewed.
Not every viewer is served an ad. YouTube says its systems decide whether an ad opportunity results in an ad, so two people watching the same live stream may have different ad experiences. A viewer who is not served an ad continues watching the stream.
Does a 24/7 stream change whether ads can be skipped?
YouTube’s live-stream help guidance does not identify a special skip rule for streams that run continuously. The best-supported answer is to apply YouTube’s general live-stream and ad-format guidance: a 24/7 stream may show skippable or non-skippable ads, but its duration alone is not stated to make ads more or less skippable.

Pre-roll and mid-roll ads: placement is not the same as skippability
On monetized live streams, YouTube supports pre-roll ads and mid-roll opportunities. Pre-roll runs automatically. Mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled, or manually inserted, depending on the creator’s settings and eligibility. These controls affect when an ad opportunity is presented; they do not guarantee that YouTube will serve an ad or that a served ad will have a skip button.
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls and says its systems can place ads at natural breakpoints. That recommendation concerns ad placement, not the viewer’s ability to skip. YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, more than 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour in a comparison across 207 countries described as covering January 2024. This was an average comparison between channels that enabled the setting and those that did not—not a guarantee for any channel, and not a measure of viewers’ skip options.

Horizontal and vertical live streams
YouTube’s current live-stream comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads for horizontal streams, but not for vertical live feeds. This is a difference in whether those live-ad placements are supported; it does not determine whether a particular ad is skippable. If an ad is served, skip availability still depends on its format.
