It can help, but detailed skin alone cannot make a CGI face feel real. A 2021 perception study found that higher-fidelity MetaHuman faces looked more human and less eerie than lower-fidelity versions under the study’s conditions. But believable digital people also depend on convincing facial movement, lighting, representation across skin tones, and the limits of the hardware or rendering pipeline.
Why detailed skin can make a CGI face more convincing
Human skin is not a flat, uniformly colored surface. Its appearance changes with light, viewing distance, texture, age and whether it is wet or dry. Pores, fine wrinkles, uneven roughness and light scattering through the skin all contribute cues that viewers use to judge a face.
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation describes the problem plainly: “Getting Human skin to look correct when rendered is a very complex topic with no single perfect solution for getting correct results.” Its guidance treats skin as a combination of material and texture choices, including roughness, specular response, subsurface scattering, pore detail and wrinkles—not a single high-resolution texture.
What skin materials and textures contribute
- Roughness and specular response influence how highlights spread across the face. Epic suggests 0.4 as a roughness starting point and 0.35 as a specular starting value derived from measured real-world values. These are guide values to tune for the character and scene, not universal settings.
- Surface detail can come from wrinkles in the face normal map and a separate tiling texture for pores. Texture scale and level of detail need to suit the camera distance: detail that reads at close range may be inappropriate or disappear at a distance.
- Subsurface scattering helps represent light interacting with and passing through skin, rather than making it behave like an opaque painted surface.
These elements can supply visual cues that a smooth or poorly tuned face lacks. They do not guarantee that the face will feel human: the viewer is also watching how it moves, speaks and responds.

What the uncanny-valley study actually found
Higgins, Egan, Fribourg, Cowan and McDonnell’s 2021 study, published at the ACM Symposium on Applied Perception, compared high- and lower-fidelity MetaHuman faces. It presented 24 clips, varied positive and negative emotional valence, and asked 20 participants—10 male and 10 female—to rate human-likeness, eeriness, attractiveness and emotion.
In that experiment, participants rated the high-fidelity characters as more humanlike and less eerie. Identity, motion, voice, lighting and rendering conditions were aligned between the fidelity levels, making the comparison evidence that fidelity mattered in the tested clips. It was a study of 20 people and a particular set of characters and conditions, not proof that realistic CGI has crossed the uncanny valley for all viewers, films or games.

The authors also noted that the facial animation used real-time tracking and solving with only minimal cleanup. They suggested that higher-quality animation could further affect eeriness. That caveat matters: a detailed face can still feel wrong if its expression is mistimed, unstable or disconnected from speech.
Why movement matters as much as surface detail
Facial motion has to communicate expression without making the skin look as though it is sliding over a fixed mask. The underlying structure moves, expressions deform the face, and skin furrows and wrinkles change locally. If those motions do not agree, added detail may make the mismatch easier to notice rather than hide it.

Work described in the SIGGRAPH 2025 proceedings addresses local expression, skin furrowing and finer-scale facial motion. ScaffoldAvatar focuses on local expression, while TeGA aims to retain detail while representing localized movement and skin wrinkling at high resolution. These are specialized research methods, not guarantees that every production character will look natural.
EA’s account of its 2024 SIGGRAPH Asia paper, “A Theory of Stabilization by Skull Carving,” makes a related point from the animation side: separating rigid skull movement from facial expression helps produce movement that is controllable and natural-looking. Skin detail and motion are coupled problems; one cannot reliably compensate for a weakness in the other.

Does realistic rendering work equally well for every face?
It should not be assumed to. A 2023 study by Victor Araujo, Angelo Brandelli Costa and Soraia Raupp Musse examined virtual characters with dark and white skin colors. In that experiment, participants perceived the dark-skin characters as less realistic but more comfortable than the white-skin characters. The authors discussed rendering and illumination as possible influences, and the result applies to their stimuli and study—not to every audience, face or graphics pipeline.
The practical lesson is to evaluate character rendering across varied faces and skin tones rather than treating one successful character as proof that a system works universally. Lighting, material response and the selected faces can all affect what an evaluation measures.

What high detail costs in games and films
More detailed digital humans can require more memory and computation. That trade-off is especially important for real-time games, where the character has to render within a frame budget on the player’s hardware. A film can use a final-render workflow that does not face the same real-time constraint, although detail still has to fit the production pipeline.
The SIGGRAPH 2025 proceedings describe SqueezeMe as a method addressing memory and compute costs in Gaussian avatar rendering. Its reported demonstration ran three Gaussian avatars at 72 FPS on a Meta Quest 3. That is a result for that method and demonstration, not a general performance expectation for photorealistic digital humans or arbitrary game scenes.
Questions to ask when assessing a digital-human workflow
- Does the face hold up at both close and typical viewing distances?
- Do expressions and speech remain stable and believable in motion, not just in a still image?
- Can the target platform meet its frame-time and memory limits with the character on screen?
- Has the workflow been evaluated across varied faces and skin tones under appropriate lighting?
- Is the intended use a real-time game or a film pipeline with final rendering?
Epic describes MetaHuman as a framework for creating and animating digital humans, with workflows involving presets, scans, sculpted meshes and refinement of features such as skin. It is one available production approach; its existence does not independently establish that the resulting faces will persuade viewers.
So, can super-detailed skin cross the uncanny valley?
Better skin detail can move a CGI face toward greater perceived realism, and the 2021 MetaHuman study found a measurable improvement in its particular comparison. But no single benchmark cited here establishes that CGI skin has crossed the uncanny valley across audiences, games and films. The strongest digital faces require skin, lighting, facial motion and production constraints to work together—and need evaluation beyond one character or one rendering setup.
