Yes. Spotify Free users can currently view lyrics when they’re available for a song and device. The feature isn’t guaranteed across Spotify’s entire catalog, and Free listeners don’t need Premium just to see on-screen lyrics. “Giving lyrics back” refers to a change after some Free users faced restrictions in 2024—not a brand-new launch.
Why Spotify lyrics seemed to disappear for Free users
Spotify first announced lyrics for Free and Premium listeners worldwide on November 18, 2021, across iOS, Android, desktop, gaming consoles and TV. Its announcement described coverage of the “majority” of its library, rather than every track. Spotify’s 2021 announcement
Some Free listeners later encountered limits. In a Spotify Community response dated July 30, 2024, Spotify said it would expand lyrics availability for Free users globally over the coming weeks. TechCrunch characterized the episode as Spotify trying a paywall and later loosening the restriction after complaints; that is the publication’s retrospective description. Spotify’s current Support guidance says lyrics are available across both Free and Premium tiers. This is the most useful guide to present-day access; it does not promise lyrics for every song or device. Spotify Support: View lyrics

How to view lyrics in the Spotify mobile app
- Play a song and open the Now Playing screen.
- Swipe up or scroll down to the Lyrics area.
- When lyrics are available, follow them as they scroll with the track. Spotify’s app guide also describes sharing lyrics from the app.

What lyrics features Free and Premium include
Viewing available on-screen lyrics does not require Premium. Spotify’s February 2026 feature announcement distinguishes that basic access from newer additions:

Spotify announced the translation, preview and offline additions in February 2026. Rollout wording matters: a feature described as rolling out may not yet appear for every account or device. A translation also appears only when one is available for that track.

A missing lyrics card alone does not show that Spotify is asking you to upgrade. Spotify says availability can depend on the song, market, device, timing and agreements with rights holders. - Try another track to see whether lyrics appear for that song.
- If possible, check the same track on another supported device; interfaces and availability may differ.
- Update the Spotify app as a general troubleshooting step, then check again. An update is not a guaranteed fix for catalog, market or rights-related gaps.
