Yes—with a key qualification. Restreamer’s current documentation says its Publication Service can send any video source to YouTube Live. That means it can publish a continuous encoded video stream containing radio audio and a static image. The documentation does not establish that Restreamer itself turns a still image and audio file into that continuous source or loops them indefinitely.
What Restreamer does—and what you must supply
Think of the setup as two separate jobs: first, create a continuous video source in which the image stays on screen while the radio audio plays; second, publish that source to YouTube. Restreamer handles the publishing step. Its current guide describes sending a video source through the Publication Service and adding a valid YouTube streaming ID: datarhei’s YouTube guide.
The guide does not document a built-in still-image-plus-audio composition or an indefinite loop control. You will need a source workflow that provides the combined, continuous feed, such as an external encoder or media process. The exact steps depend on that workflow; the available documentation does not verify a particular command or current Restreamer control for creating it.
Set up the YouTube channel before configuring Restreamer
- Verify the channel and enable live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take at least 24 hours after the request, so do this ahead of the planned launch: YouTube Help: Stream across platforms.
- Prepare the continuous source. Confirm that it carries both the radio audio and the static-image video for as long as you intend to broadcast. Check the selected source workflow and Restreamer release rather than assuming Restreamer generates or loops these elements itself.
- Create or retrieve the YouTube stream credentials. Use the streaming ID required by Restreamer’s Publication Service. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Add the publication destination in Restreamer. In the current guide, select Publication Service, enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, and save. Confirm that the connection is established and monitor the displayed connection and bitrate.
- Check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the image and audio and that stream health is acceptable before treating the channel as continuously available.
Plan for bandwidth, host uptime and recovery
YouTube advises estimating the bitrate you plan to send, making sure upload capacity is sufficient, and checking real-world bandwidth and stream health. The required throughput depends on the chosen encoding settings and destination setup; there is no single bitrate figure established for every radio stream. See YouTube’s guidance.

With self-hosted Restreamer, the source process, host, power and internet connection all have to remain available for the broadcast to continue. The Restreamer project describes a self-hosted streaming server with multiple audio/video inputs and outputs, FFmpeg video processing, and support for hardware and virtual devices. It also notes that the software can be combined with single-board computers such as Raspberry Pi. Those broad capabilities do not establish that a particular device can handle every encoding workload: datarhei’s Restreamer repository.
Separate live duration from YouTube’s saved recording
A stream’s ability to stay live and whether YouTube saves an archive are different questions. Restreamer’s YouTube guide advises ending the broadcast on YouTube before interrupting Restreamer; stopping Restreamer while the broadcast is live may affect whether the stream is saved in YouTube’s DVR archive.

Restream, a separate relay service, says YouTube has no stream duration limit and that YouTube archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Its page also notes that Restream’s own servers may undergo maintenance and restart during runs longer than 24 hours; that is a caveat about Restream’s service, not a duration limit for self-hosted datarhei Restreamer. Because archive behavior can change, check current YouTube guidance before relying on a particular recording outcome: Restream Help Center: How long can I stream for?
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, that the streaming ID is valid, and that the Publication Service connection is active.
- The image appears but there is no sound, or vice versa: Check the source-generation workflow. The outgoing feed needs both the static-image video and radio audio; the Restreamer publishing guide does not say it creates the combined source for you.
- The stream drops or becomes unhealthy: Check the source process, host, power and internet connection, then review YouTube’s stream-health information and available upload capacity.
- The broadcast is live but no archive appears: Check how and when the broadcast was ended. Restreamer advises ending it on YouTube before interrupting Restreamer; do not assume that every live run will produce a saved recording.
