In datarhei Restreamer, enable process reconnect, set a reconnect interval and a timeout for a hanging process, then save. These settings let a process retry after an interruption; they cannot keep a YouTube stream transmitting while its only internet connection is down. For continuity through a full broadband outage, you need the original connection restored or a separately configured, independent network path.
What Restreamer’s recovery settings can—and cannot—do
Restreamer’s process controls address a process that malfunctions or stops: reconnect can tell it to try again, while the interval and timeout govern retry timing and how a hanging process is handled. Restreamer’s documentation does not prescribe universal values for either timing setting, so choose and test them against your source and deployment rather than relying on a supposed standard. A retry is not a second internet connection. If Indian broadband is completely unavailable and there is no alternate route, Restreamer cannot send video to YouTube until connectivity returns. Reconnect may help the process resume afterward, but it does not guarantee continuous delivery during the outage.
Enable reconnect and check the YouTube publishing setup
- Open the relevant stream’s process settings in Restreamer and locate the recovery controls described under Processing and Control.
- Enable the reconnect option.
- Choose a reconnect interval in seconds and a timeout after which a hanging process is terminated and marked faulty. The documentation does not give recommended universal values; validate both settings with your actual source and deployment.
- Save the settings.
- Check the YouTube publication configuration. Restreamer’s documented setup uses Publication Service, a valid YouTube streaming ID, and Save. Confirm the ID or stream key is correct before testing. See Restreamer’s YouTube guide.
Test the connection and choose a sustainable stream quality
Before an important broadcast, test the complete setup with representative audio and movement. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, choosing a quality the connection can reliably sustain, and watching stream health and messages while live. Those steps can help with a constrained or unstable upload, but cannot restore a fully failed connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- Use an upload speed test to assess the connection available to the encoder.
- Test with the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and movement you intend to use; static or low-motion test material may not represent a demanding broadcast.
- During the test and event, monitor YouTube stream health and messages as well as the Restreamer process.
- If stream health degrades, reduce the stream quality to a level the connection can sustain and test again.
YouTube’s encoder settings page provides its current recommendations for resolutions, frame rates, bitrates, and keyframes. Treat these as technical guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Indian ISP connection can sustain a chosen setting.
What to do when broadband drops completely
First determine whether the broadband path is down or only the Restreamer process has failed. If the connection itself is unavailable, restore it or switch to an alternate path that was configured and tested in advance. A phone hotspot or cellular failover is one possible category of alternate connectivity, not a verified recommendation for any provider, plan, router, or locality in India; confirm coverage and compatibility at the actual streaming location.

For a more deliberate backup setup, Restream’s separate backup-stream service describes two encoders and recommends two distinct network connections. Its help page currently describes the offering as Enterprise. That is a separate service and configuration—not a datarhei Restreamer setting—and local Indian coverage or compatibility is not established by its guidance. Check current plan terms and destination behavior before depending on it. Restream backup-stream guidance.

Troubleshooting common recovery problems
- The process retries but the stream does not return: check whether internet connectivity has actually returned, then verify the YouTube publication ID or stream key and inspect YouTube stream health.
- The process stays stuck or is marked faulty: review the timeout and reconnect interval, then test revised values with the actual source. The documentation does not specify a universal interval or timeout.
- The connection is back but stream health remains poor: test upload bitrate again and lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the connection can sustain the stream reliably.
- You need the stream to continue through an ISP outage: process retry alone is insufficient. Restore broadband or use an already configured independent connection and source.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: for future events, follow Restreamer’s guidance to end the stream on YouTube first rather than interrupting Restreamer mid-event.
