Sometimes—but there is no reliable universal stream count or break-even price. One VPS can cost less if it can sustain the combined encoding or relay workload, has enough outbound bandwidth and monthly transfer, and its full bill stays below the cost of separate cloud plans. The answer depends on your video settings, whether the VPS encodes or merely forwards pre-encoded feeds, and the provider’s plan, region and overage rules.
First decide what “several streams” means
This comparison is about sending several independent, continuous feeds from one VPS to YouTube. It is not the same as sending one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it to several destinations. YouTube describes the latter as a simulstreaming option, but it does not establish how many independent streams a particular VPS can run.
Encoding on the VPS
If the VPS encodes or transcodes video, it must handle the combined real-time processing load for every feed. Resolution, frame rate, codec and encoder settings all affect that load. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, and bitrate recommendations that vary by codec and video settings. Those ingestion recommendations are not VPS performance benchmarks.
Relaying pre-encoded video
If each video has already been encoded and the VPS only forwards it, the compute workload differs from encoding. Network capacity and stable delivery still matter. Do not assume that a plan capable of relaying feeds can also encode those feeds in real time.

Calculate the combined network requirement
Add the target bitrate of every feed the VPS will send to YouTube. YouTube’s general streaming tips say the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend 20% upload headroom. Its simulstream guidance advises targeting upload speed 1.5 to 2 times the combined bitrate for stability, particularly on shared connections.
For example, YouTube’s simulstream guidance illustrates two feeds at 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps: their combined target is 10 Mbps, for which the guidance’s 1.5–2× margin implies 15–20 Mbps upload speed. This is a bandwidth-planning example, not a guarantee that a VPS can encode either feed or sustain the setup continuously.

For a sense of why settings matter, YouTube’s encoder table lists 14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Use the current table for each feed rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
Compare compute, transfer and reliability—not just the headline price
A low monthly VPS price is not proof of adequate 24/7 capacity. Shared CPU plans can be cost-conscious; dedicated CPU resources are positioned for sustained CPU workloads. Akamai describes its compute plan types in those terms, while DigitalOcean describes its CPU-Optimized Droplets as suited to sustained CPU work including video encoding. These are provider descriptions, not independent tests of a specific multi-stream workload.

At the time of the cited official pages in 2026, Akamai’s Europe pricing page listed a shared CPU Linode 1 GB plan at $2/month with 1 vCPU and 1 TB transfer, and a shared CPU Linode 8 GB plan at $10/month with 4 CPUs and 5 TB transfer. DigitalOcean listed shared CPU Droplets starting at $4/month and CPU-Optimized Droplets starting at $42/month. These are regional or starting-price examples, not like-for-like recommendations; plan generation, region, tax, availability and transfer overages can change the bill. The low shared-plan starting price does not establish sustained multi-stream encoding capacity. Check the current provider terms before comparing costs.
Estimate monthly transfer for continuous operation
For an always-on stream, bitrate accumulates around the clock. A useful estimate for decimal gigabytes is:

Monthly transfer (GB) ≈ aggregate bitrate (Mbps) × 0.45 × 24 × 30
The 0.45 factor converts Mbps to approximately GB per hour; the result assumes the target bitrate is sustained for 30 days. Actual usage varies with bitrate behavior and the provider’s measurement and billing method. Compare the estimate with the plan’s included outbound transfer, then check the overage price and any billing limits. A plan that looks cheap before transfer charges may not remain cheap for continuous feeds.

Use a test to establish whether the savings are real
- List the feeds. For each, record resolution, frame rate, codec, audio and target bitrate.
- Sum the outbound bitrates. Apply YouTube’s upload margin guidance to the aggregate target, not just to one feed.
- Identify the VPS job. Establish whether it will encode, transcode or only relay pre-encoded files.
- Check the plan in the intended region. Verify sustained CPU suitability, included outbound transfer, overage policy, storage charges and billing rules directly with the provider.
- Compare complete monthly costs. Add the VPS, storage or attached resources, transfer overages and any relay service; compare that total with the separate-plan total. Account for the operational impact if all feeds depend on one instance.
- Run all intended feeds together. Use representative settings and runtime, then monitor CPU, dropped frames, YouTube stream health, network throughput and transfer consumption before relying on the setup.
YouTube recommends testing realistic conditions and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance and streaming tips. A short test may catch an encoding or bandwidth problem, but it cannot by itself establish long-term reliability or a full month’s transfer bill.
Check YouTube eligibility and stream configuration
Before building around an always-on feed, confirm the channel can go live. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel needs verification and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate, and verify each feed in the live control room.
Continuous operation does not exempt a channel from copyright or other YouTube rules. Use material you have the rights to stream, and make sure each feed complies with platform policies. A technically stable stream is not a guarantee of eligibility for monetization or continued availability.
When a cloud relay is the right comparison
If you have one high-quality feed and want to distribute it to multiple channels, resolutions or platforms, a cloud relay may fit better than running several independent source streams on a VPS. YouTube’s simulstream guidance describes this architecture. It is a different workload and cost comparison: it does not answer whether one VPS can encode and deliver several distinct 24/7 feeds.
