Use remote desktop software to control the cloud computer itself, or—if the stream is running in OBS Studio—use OBS’s WebSocket interface for supported controls such as scenes and sources. YouTube Studio handles a separate layer: the stream preview and YouTube-side settings and go-live workflow. Which method you need depends on what you want to change.
Choose the control method for the task

These controls complement one another. YouTube Studio does not operate the cloud computer’s desktop or change OBS scenes. Remote desktop and OBS WebSocket do not replace checking the stream preview and status in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the encoder as sending the feed and Live Control Room as the place to monitor and manage the YouTube-side workflow (YouTube encoder setup; Live Control Room).
Control the cloud computer with remote desktop
Remote desktop gives you access to the cloud computer’s desktop from your local computer. It is the most direct option when you need the full interface: open OBS, change a setting, inspect an alert, or use another application installed on the host.
- Configure access on the cloud computer. Install and set up a remote desktop application that supports the cloud host’s operating system. Configure unattended access with a strong password, or arrange for someone at the remote computer to accept the session. The provider’s instructions and the cloud host’s operating system determine the exact setup.
- Connect from your other computer. For example, AnyDesk’s documented workflow uses the remote device’s ID or alias; depending on its configuration, you enter the unattended-access password or wait for the remote user to accept the connection (AnyDesk connection instructions).
- Operate the encoder, then verify the broadcast. Make the required change in OBS or the relevant app. Separately check Live Control Room to confirm the incoming feed and stream status.
Remote desktop depends on the host remaining reachable and the remote-access service being configured correctly. Confirm the provider’s current operating-system support and access requirements for your particular cloud computer; the workflow can differ between hosts.

Control OBS without a full desktop session
If the cloud encoder is OBS Studio and you only need supported OBS actions, an external client or script can use OBS’s WebSocket interface. OBS Studio includes WebSocket control by default from version 28 onward. OBS documents external control of scenes and sources, among other supported actions (OBS Remote Control Guide).
- Check the OBS version. Use OBS Studio 28 or later for the built-in WebSocket interface.
- Enable and secure the interface. Configure WebSocket access in OBS and enable authentication with a password. OBS recommends password protection; do not expose an unauthenticated control endpoint to the internet.
- Connect a compatible client or script. Use it for the OBS actions it supports, such as switching scenes or controlling sources. This does not provide general access to the desktop or replace YouTube Studio.
- Observe the result. Confirm the change in the stream output and check YouTube’s preview and status.
Choose WebSocket when you need specific OBS controls or automation and can manage the client and authentication. Choose remote desktop when you need the full graphical desktop or an action the client does not support.

Use YouTube Studio for YouTube-side controls
Open YouTube Studio and go to the channel’s Live Control Room. It is the place to check the incoming preview and use YouTube’s stream workflow. YouTube’s setup guidance says to wait for the preview and then select Go live; the encoder is responsible for sending the video feed (YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube encoder setup).
Stream settings include the stream key and stream URL. A stream key is credential-like: YouTube describes it as similar to a password and uses it to direct the encoder’s feed. Keep it private. If you believe it has been exposed, use YouTube’s reset process and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager is required to reset a stream key (YouTube stream settings; Reset a stream key).

Secure access and monitor the live output
- Protect the cloud computer. Use the remote-access provider’s authentication and access controls; do not leave remote desktop open to anyone who can reach it.
- Protect OBS control. Enable OBS WebSocket authentication and set a password. A control endpoint without authentication can let an unauthorized person change the stream.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not share it in screenshots, chats, scripts, or public pages. Reset it and update the encoder if it is compromised.
- Monitor, not just command. YouTube advises checking the Live Control Room preview and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. A remote button press is not proof that viewers are receiving the intended output (YouTube live streaming tips).
Common control problems and fixes
