Yes, it can—but “old” and “mini PC” do not tell you whether a particular machine can run the stream reliably. The answer depends chiefly on whether FFmpeg can stream-copy your files or must decode and re-encode them, plus the PC’s sustained performance and your upload connection. You need to test the actual playlist and monitor YouTube’s stream health before trusting it unattended.
What determines whether the mini PC can keep up?
Looping a playlist and encoding video are separate workloads. If your source files are compatible with YouTube’s ingest format, FFmpeg may be able to copy their packets without decoding or encoding. That is typically much lighter than transcoding. If the files need scaling, filtering, or conversion to a different codec or format, FFmpeg has to process the video and the load can rise substantially.
Stream copy: the lighter path, when compatible
FFmpeg stream copy avoids decoding, filtering, and encoding, so it is fast and does not introduce generation loss. But it cannot apply filters, and copying can fail when the output container lacks information the input requires. A playlist with varied codecs, resolutions, frame rates, or audio formats may not work as a single copy-through stream without preparation. See the FFmpeg documentation on stream copy.
Re-encoding: more processing and more variables
Transcoding means decoding a stream and encoding it again. FFmpeg describes this as computationally expensive in many cases and notes that it can degrade quality. If your workflow requires filters or format conversion, the mini PC must encode continuously at or faster than real time for the chosen output. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the distinction between stream copy and transcoding.

Hardware encoding is not guaranteed by the PC’s age or label
An integrated GPU or a processor brand alone does not prove that your installed FFmpeg build can use hardware acceleration for the needed codecs. FFmpeg notes that support depends on the build and drivers; transferring frames between system memory and GPU memory can also reduce performance. Its QSV accelerated-transcoding path requires decoder and encoder support and does not allow filters in that path. Verify the actual build and test it rather than assuming hardware encoding will solve a performance problem.
Check the entire YouTube Live chain
A capable encoder is only one requirement. Your upload connection must sustain the selected bitrate, the stream key and ingest URL must be correct, and the channel must be eligible to stream. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Use live-ingest settings, not video-upload settings
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and keyframes every 2 seconds (not over 4 seconds). Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate, so choose the matching row in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Test the intended feed before going live and watch stream health during operation. These settings are YouTube’s changeable live-ingest recommendations, checked 2026-10-03; they are not proof that a specific mini PC can encode them.

- Identify the system: record the CPU, any graphics or encoder hardware, operating system, and FFmpeg build. Check whether that build and its drivers support the codecs you plan to use.
- Inspect the files: note the video and audio codecs, resolutions, frame rates, and containers across the playlist. Determine whether they can be copied as-is or require conversion, scaling, or other filters.
- Set a realistic output: choose a YouTube-supported resolution and frame rate, then use the corresponding codec and bitrate guidance. Measure upload capacity and leave headroom rather than planning around a connection that only just matches the target bitrate.
- Test the representative workload: run the actual playlist and output settings long enough to reveal sustained-performance issues, heat-related slowdown, file-boundary failures, and network interruptions. Watch FFmpeg’s reported processing speed and YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Check recovery behavior: verify what happens after a dropped connection, FFmpeg exit, or machine restart. A short preview confirms only that the setup can start; it does not establish unattended reliability for a continuous stream.
These are evaluation steps, not results from a test of a particular computer. YouTube also advises creators to continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.
Common failure points and what to check
- FFmpeg cannot copy a file or the stream breaks at a playlist boundary: inspect the formats of the files around that boundary. Stream copy is not a universal format converter; prepare compatible files or use a suitable transcoding path.
- Processing falls behind real time: determine whether the command is encoding, filtering, or scaling rather than copying. Reduce the workload—such as output resolution or frame rate—or use hardware encoding only after confirming that the FFmpeg build, drivers, and codec path support it.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed disconnects: check upload stability and whether the selected bitrate is sustainable, then confirm the ingest URL, stream key, codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance.
- The stream fails to start: confirm channel eligibility, the correct live-stream setup, and that the stream key is current. Do not expose the key; treat it as a credential.
- It works briefly but not unattended: investigate heat-related slowdown, file transitions, network interruptions, and how the process restarts after failure. Monitor a sustained representative run before relying on it.
