Yes—many smart TVs can play videos, photos, and music from an external USB hard drive. But a USB port alone does not guarantee support: the TV must accept the drive’s file system and capacity, supply enough power, and be able to decode the media files. Recording live TV, pausing broadcasts, and using a drive for app storage are separate, more restricted functions.
Before you buy or format a drive, check the manual for your exact TV model. The right setup depends on what you want to do with the drive.
What does “work” mean?
A TV may support one use of USB storage but not another. In particular, playing a movie file and recording a broadcast are not interchangeable features.

Manufacturers document USB media playback for many models, including LG TVs, Sony BRAVIA TVs, and applicable Roku devices. These examples do not mean every TV from those brands supports every drive or format. Use the documentation for your specific model.

Check the TV before buying or formatting
Find the model number on the TV’s label or in its settings, then look up the official manual or support page. Search for the model plus “USB hard drive,” “USB media playback,” “supported file formats,” or, if relevant, “USB recording.” Check four things:
- What the USB port supports. A port may be intended for service, firmware updates, power, or accessories rather than media. Some TVs identify a particular socket for an HDD; a label such as “HDD 5V 1A” is a useful clue, not a substitute for the manual.
- Supported file systems. FAT32, NTFS, and exFAT support varies. Do not assume a format works just because a computer can read it.
- Maximum capacity. Limits can vary by model and by function—playback, recording, and app storage may have different limits.
- Power requirements. A portable mechanical drive draws power from USB, and a TV port may not provide enough, especially when the drive spins up.
Limits vary even within a brand. For example, LG’s cited guidance describes FAT32 or NTFS and an external-storage limit of 2 TB for the models covered there. Sony’s BRAVIA guidance gives different limits across series and uses, with some listed playback combinations supporting larger capacities and different file systems. Treat those as examples for the documented models, not universal brand-wide rules.
Choose a drive and file system that fit
Portable HDD: A practical, often economical choice for a large library if the TV can supply enough power. It is bus-powered, so detection can be unreliable on a low-power port.

Self-powered desktop HDD: A better choice when the TV’s USB power is uncertain or the drive will stay beside the television. It has its own AC adapter and is less dependent on the TV’s port for power.
External SSD: Silent, portable, and less vulnerable to knocks than a mechanical HDD. It is not automatically more compatible: the TV still needs to support its USB behavior and file system. Sony notes that SSD functionality is not guaranteed for the BRAVIA families covered by its guidance.
USB flash drive: Convenient for occasional playback or a small collection. It is not necessarily better for sustained playback or recording; speed and sustained performance vary.

Network storage: A computer, NAS, or media-server setup can be more suitable for a big library or several TVs, but it adds network and software setup. It is not the same as plugging a drive directly into the TV.
Which file system should you use?
- FAT32 is widely supported, but it generally cannot hold a single file larger than 4 GB. That can rule it out for large movie files even when the drive has ample free space.
- NTFS handles large files and is useful in many Windows workflows, but some TVs do not support it. It may also be inconvenient to write to from some computers without extra software.
- exFAT works well across many modern computers and some TVs, but it is not universal. Confirm support in the TV manual.
- TV-specific recording or device-storage formats may erase the drive’s contents or make it unusable as a normal computer-readable media drive.
Do not format the drive until you have checked the TV’s requirements and backed up anything on it. Formatting normally erases the drive.
Why an MP4 or MKV may still not play
A file extension identifies a container, not everything inside it. An MP4 or MKV can contain video encoded with H.264, HEVC, or another codec, plus audio in AAC, DTS, or a different format. A TV may recognize the container but reject one of its streams. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, HDR profile, audio channels, subtitles, or a damaged file can also prevent playback.

This matters especially with 4K and HDR: a TV’s ability to display 4K does not guarantee that its USB player supports every 4K file, high-bitrate remux, HDR profile, or lossless audio track. Subtitle support varies too; external subtitle files may need a supported format and a filename that matches the video.
For a file that appears but will not play:
- Check the TV’s official media-format table.
- Inspect the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, HDR, and subtitle details with a media-information tool such as MediaInfo.
- Compare those details with the TV’s documented support. If needed, remux or convert a short sample to a supported combination and test it before processing a whole library.
Conversion is not a guaranteed fix. Protected downloads from streaming apps are generally managed inside those apps; copying them to a normal USB drive does not make them playable through the TV’s media browser. Sony also cautions that a file can fail even when its format appears to be supported.

Connect a drive for media playback
- Back up the drive and check the TV’s supported file systems, capacity, and USB port.
- If needed, format it on a computer only after confirming the required format. Put a few test files on it first.
- Safely eject it from the computer, then connect it directly to the TV. Start with the designated HDD or media USB port if the manual specifies one.
- Wait for detection, then open the TV’s Source, Input, Media, USB, or Home Dashboard menu. Exact labels vary by model.
- Select the drive and the relevant media category, then test a known-compatible file. If the TV offers an eject command, use it before disconnecting.
LG’s USB connection instructions, for example, direct users to connect the storage device and select it through the TV’s input interface. Other brands and model generations use different menus.

Recording and pausing live TV are different features
A TV that plays files from USB may not record anything. Where USB recording is available, the feature is generally for supported tuner or broadcast sources—not a universal recorder for everything on screen. Do not assume it can record video from an HDMI-connected device or protected streaming services.
The TV may test, register, or reformat a drive before recording. That can erase existing files, and recordings may be encrypted or tied to the original TV, so they may not play on a computer or another television. Check the exact model’s manual and regional availability before dedicating a drive to recording. Sony documents separate requirements for recording and storage in its USB HDD guidance.
If you want to pause or rewind a broadcast, look in the manual for “time shift,” “live playback,” “pause live TV,” or “PVR.” Do not infer that feature from the presence of a USB socket.
Troubleshoot by symptom

LG lists incompatible file systems and inadequate power among causes of recognition problems in its USB troubleshooting guidance. A drive working on a computer does not prove the TV should read it: computers typically support more file systems, partition layouts, devices, and media formats.
When direct USB playback is not enough
If several TVs need the same library, files use a variety of codecs, or you want metadata and watch history, consider serving the library over your home network from a computer or NAS. DLNA, Plex, and Jellyfin are examples of media-server approaches; support and setup requirements vary by TV and app. Some server setups can transcode an incompatible file, but that adds software, network, and maintenance requirements. Roku documents both USB playback and network-media-server options, including DLNA and Plex, in its media-sharing guidance. A dedicated media player is another option when the TV’s built-in player is the limiting factor.
Whichever method you choose, distinguish local personal files from protected app downloads. The latter generally remain subject to the streaming service’s playback controls and are not made portable by storing them on an external drive.
