AI can generate music convincing enough to fool most listeners in a test, but The Velvet Sundown does not prove that musicians have been replaced. It shows a narrower, important change: a synthetic act can reach streaming services and sound plausible, while listeners may have little reliable information about who—or what—created the music.
What happened with The Velvet Sundown?
In a July 4, 2025 report, Sweden’s SVT said Deezer had analyzed The Velvet Sundown’s songs and found them to be 100% AI-generated. SVT quoted Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier saying, “We can see that all their songs are one hundred percent AI-generated.” That is Deezer’s finding as reported by SVT, not an independent test conducted for this article. The Associated Press described the Velvet Sundown as a fictitious rock group whose music, lyrics, and album art were AI-generated. The case raises a practical question: if a listener encounters a polished song without clear context, how can they tell whether it reflects human performance, AI generation, or a mixture? Can listeners tell AI music from human-made music?
Not reliably in one blind test. In a Deezer/Ipsos online survey fielded October 6–10, 2025, 9,000 adults aged 18–65 in eight countries heard three songs—two AI-generated and one human-made. Ninety-seven percent could not distinguish the fully AI-generated music from the human-made sample. The same survey found that 80% of participants agreed fully AI-generated music should be clearly labeled, and 70% believed it threatens the livelihoods of current and future musicians, artists, or composers. These are respondents’ views, not measurements of actual job losses.
How much AI music is on streaming services?
Deezer’s platform figures, updated through June 2026, show why upload volume and listening share must not be conflated. The service said it received nearly 90,000 fully AI-generated tracks per day, representing more than 50% of its total daily deliveries on peak days. Yet Deezer reported that fully AI-generated music accounted for 1–3% of streams. These are Deezer-specific delivery and listening figures, not estimates for the entire music industry. Deezer also reported that up to 85% of streams generated by fully AI-generated tracks were fraudulent in 2025. “Up to” matters: this is the platform’s reported upper figure for those tracks, not a claim about all AI music, all streaming services, or all streams. A fraudulent-stream share is a separate measure from the share of uploads or total listening.

The approaches address different parts of the problem. An album tag can signal that fully generated tracks are present, while contribution credits can describe specific AI-assisted elements. Neither approach, on the available information, amounts to a universal, independently verified label for every track on every service.

How can you check whether a band is AI?
There is no single clue that settles the question. AP recommends checking for evidence that an act exists beyond its streaming profile: sustained social activity, real-world signs of performances, footage of earlier shows, upcoming concerts, and releases from established labels. Some creators post generated tracks on Suno or Udio, where searching a track title or creator handle may provide context. These are investigative leads, not conclusive tests. - Check whether the artist has a consistent history across official channels, rather than only a streaming-page biography.
- Look for verifiable concert dates or footage that predates the release you are investigating.
- Review credits and platform labels, but treat missing AI credits as inconclusive because disclosure may be incomplete.
- Search a distinctive lyric, title, or creator handle on generation platforms if there is a specific reason to suspect the track was published there.
Does The Velvet Sundown prove AI is replacing musicians?
No. The case demonstrates that AI-generated music can be packaged and distributed as an apparent band, and the Deezer/Ipsos test suggests listeners may struggle to identify it by sound alone. Deezer’s figures also point to rapid growth in AI-track deliveries on its own service. None of these facts establishes how many working musicians have lost jobs or shows that AI has replaced musicians across the industry.

“Replacing musicians” can mean several different things: generating a finished recording, imitating a voice, automating parts of composition or production, or displacing paid human work. The cited evidence addresses synthetic music, platform rules, fraudulent streaming, listener perceptions, and fears about livelihoods; it does not quantify industry-wide replacement. The more grounded conclusion is that AI has become capable of producing plausible releases and is creating new questions about attribution, promotion, and fair payment—while the scale of job displacement remains unestablished by these sources.
