Usually, no. If you mean watching a meditation stream, computer sleep can interrupt playback or the internet connection; turn off the display while keeping the computer awake, or use another device. If you mean broadcasting your own meditation stream, a computer-based encoder needs the computer awake and connected. A standalone encoder or a cloud service can remove the computer from that workflow.
First: are you watching or broadcasting?
“Keep a stream live” can mean two different things:
- Watching another channel: Sleep may stop the browser’s playback or disconnect the device from the internet. A display that is off is not the same as a computer that is asleep.
- Broadcasting your own channel: The encoder must continue sending video and audio to YouTube. A software encoder running on your computer cannot keep transmitting after that computer sleeps.
The outcome depends on the device, operating system, power settings, and network behavior; there is no setting that guarantees playback or transmission through sleep on every computer.
If you want to listen while the screen is off
Keep the computer awake, not asleep
Set the display to turn off while preventing the computer from sleeping. On a Mac, Apple documents the Battery setting “Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off.” It applies when the Mac is connected to power; labels and availability vary by macOS version and model. On Windows, review the screen and sleep timeouts in your power settings. Some PCs may disconnect from the network during sleep, and Microsoft notes that relevant options depend on the hardware.

Keeping the computer awake can use more power than letting it sleep. If you are listening for a long session, connect to power and check that playback and the network remain active after the display turns off.
Use another playback device if the computer must sleep
If the computer needs to enter sleep, move playback to a phone, tablet, smart speaker, or other device that can stay awake and connected. YouTube’s computer-player Sleep Timer does the opposite of continuous playback: it pauses the video after the interval you select.

If you are broadcasting your own meditation stream
Check the YouTube and encoder setup
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and set up the livestream. Use YouTube’s encoder documentation to confirm the event and stream settings.
- Copy the stream key from YouTube and enter it in the encoder. The key tells the encoder where to send its feed; treat it as a credential and do not share it publicly.
- Start the encoder while the computer is awake and online. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and check stream health before relying on an unattended broadcast.
- Test the setup through the planned duration and watch for interruptions. YouTube recommends monitoring streams; after an event has stopped on YouTube, its guidance says to stop the encoder.
With a software encoder, sleep stops the computer from doing the work of encoding and transmitting. Disabling sleep may keep the broadcast running, but it does not remove risks such as a power loss, network drop, encoder crash, or YouTube interruption.
Consider a standalone hardware encoder
YouTube supports standalone hardware encoders as well as computer-based software encoders. A hardware encoder can remove the computer from some workflows, but check that the device supports your video source, network connection, unattended operation, and monitoring requirements.

YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus among verified hardware encoders. Its guide describes direct YouTube streaming and PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media without a computer. That product description does not establish that every live-input workflow can run without a computer; verify the exact setup you need.

Troubleshooting
- Playback stops when the display goes dark: The computer may be sleeping rather than only turning off its display. Adjust the sleep timeout and test again while connected to power.
- Playback stops after the computer sleeps: This is expected on many setups. Use display-off while awake or switch playback to a device that remains active.
- Your broadcast disappears when the computer sleeps: A computer-based encoder needs an awake host. Prevent sleep during a DIY broadcast, or use a suitable hardware encoder or cloud workflow.
- The computer stays awake but the stream still drops: Check internet connectivity, encoder status, and YouTube stream health. Awake status alone does not guarantee a stable connection.
- A Mac wakes for network access but playback still stops: Apple documents Wake for network access for access to shared services; it is not a promise that a browser stream or encoder will keep running.
- A hardware device cannot handle your source or scheduled media: Confirm source compatibility and the device’s specific streaming and scheduling capabilities before depending on it.
Copyright and prerecorded meditation video
Before broadcasting music, guided meditation, visuals, or recordings you did not create, confirm that you have the rights to use them in a livestream. A continuous or prerecorded format does not by itself grant permission. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and the terms for any music or footage licenses you rely on.
