Yes. A YouTube channel with 50 subscribers can stream prerecorded video from a computer if live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and it has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s 50-subscriber threshold applies to mobile live streaming—not to computer streaming with an encoder. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Why the 50-subscriber rule does not block computer streaming
YouTube lists at least 50 subscribers as a requirement for mobile live streaming. Its general eligibility guidance instead requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s computer options include webcam streaming and encoder streaming; an encoder is the relevant option for sending a prerecorded video file.
These are YouTube’s current help requirements, accessed in 2026. Whether a particular channel is eligible depends on its status, which the channel owner should check in YouTube Studio.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days.
- A computer running a software encoder capable of sending your video to YouTube. YouTube describes encoder apps as software that runs on a computer; specialized hardware is optional, not required for a basic computer workflow.
- A prerecorded video and audio that you own or have permission to use in a live stream.
- Your YouTube stream URL and stream key, available in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to stream to your channel.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary for computer live streaming. A webcam, microphone, capture card, or standalone encoder is not established as necessary when the source is an existing local video file.

How to stream a prerecorded video from a computer
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and follow the prompts to create or select a stream in Live Control Room. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Set up the encoder. Open your computer’s software encoder and choose its YouTube destination if available. Otherwise, in YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private.
- Load and configure the video. Select the prerecorded file as the encoder’s source and set the output to match the file and your available upload connection. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; the available material does not establish one bitrate or resolution as right for every video and connection.
- Test before going live. Check the YouTube preview, confirm the picture and audio are present and in sync, and make a test stream if possible. Monitor the stream’s quality rather than assuming a successful encoder connection means viewers are receiving a clean signal.
- Start the stream. Start sending the video from the encoder and follow the status shown in Live Control Room. Keep the computer and encoder running for as long as this computer-based stream needs to continue.
Check rights and YouTube rules before streaming
Playing a recording as a live stream does not avoid copyright enforcement. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted material, and may interrupt or terminate a stream if it detects a problem. Use material you created or have cleared for this specific use. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist so the stream is not interrupted.
Permission to use a recording and permission to use all of its components are not always the same: check the rights for music, footage, and other included material. Also follow YouTube’s applicable content rules; using an encoder or prerecorded input does not remove those obligations.

Computer streaming versus mobile streaming
| Method | Subscriber requirement stated by YouTube | How it handles prerecorded video |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile live streaming | At least 50 subscribers | The 50-subscriber threshold is specific to this method. |
| Computer encoder | No subscriber minimum stated in YouTube’s general and computer encoder guidance | Use encoder software to send the prerecorded video to YouTube using the stream URL and key. |
Both methods remain subject to channel eligibility and content-rights rules. For a prerecorded file, use the computer encoder workflow rather than treating the mobile threshold as a universal live-stream requirement.
Troubleshooting common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and any live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: Confirm that you selected YouTube or entered the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Check for extra spaces or an outdated key, and keep the key private.
- YouTube shows no picture or sound: Confirm the encoder is sending the intended file, then inspect the preview and test audio/video before going live.
- The stream is interrupted after starting: Check Live Control Room for a quality or rights issue. YouTube may interrupt or terminate a live stream when it detects third-party copyrighted content; a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel even where you have a licence.
