Yes, potentially. An always-on playlist stream does not automatically prevent a YouTube channel from earning memberships, but neither does running one guarantee approval. The channel must qualify for memberships, and YouTube evaluates its monetization eligibility and content under policies that apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos.
What a channel needs for memberships
Channel memberships are recurring monthly payments in exchange for members-only perks, such as badges and emoji. They are a YouTube fan-funding feature, not donations or crowdfunding. Eligibility for the feature and approval of the channel’s content are separate questions. YouTube Commerce Products monetization policies describe the conditions for fan-funding features.
As of the eligibility guidance accessed October 3, 2026, YouTube lists the following thresholds for the lower YouTube Partner Program (YPP) tier that includes memberships:
- At least 500 subscribers.
- At least three public uploads in the last 90 days.
- Either 3,000 qualified public watch hours from long-form videos in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Meeting those thresholds is not enough by itself. You must be accepted into YPP, be at least 18, live in a country or region where memberships are available, and accept the applicable Commerce Product Module or Commerce Product Addendum. YouTube also lists channel-specific conditions: the channel must not be set as Made for Kids, must not have a significant number of videos set as Made for Kids or otherwise ineligible, and must not be a music channel under SRAV. Requirements and availability can change; check YouTube’s current YPP and earnings guidance and your channel’s Studio Earn tab before relying on eligibility.

Does looping content put membership approval at risk?
YouTube does not state in the cited policies that every always-on playlist stream is allowed or that the format is automatically prohibited. Its monetization rules apply to live streams, and reviewers may consider the channel as a whole: its theme, most-viewed and newest videos, videos accounting for the most watch time, metadata, and About section. The result depends on the content and context of the individual channel, so no stream format can guarantee approval.
The central question is what viewers are getting from the programming—not simply whether a playlist repeats. YouTube expects original, authentic content made for viewer enjoyment or education. Its policies disallow repetitive or mass-produced content that is generic or interchangeable, as well as reused content without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or added educational or entertainment value. A stream of varied, original programming with a clear viewer benefit is materially different from a loop of minimally changed compilations or copied material.

YouTube’s channel monetization policy puts the originality expectation this way: “Be your original creation. If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own.” Read the full YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated programming.
Permission and monetization are different tests
Reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. Having permission to use someone else’s footage or music does not, by itself, make the stream eligible for monetization: YouTube says minimally changed borrowed content may fail the reused-content policy even when the creator has permission. Conversely, a monetization decision is not a copyright clearance. Secure the necessary rights separately and make the stream’s original contribution clear.

How to assess your playlist before applying
Use these questions to spot risks; they are a practical application of YouTube’s general policy framework, not a prediction of how reviewers will decide your case.
- Originality: Did you make the material, or have you meaningfully transformed borrowed material with substantial commentary, editing, or educational or entertainment value?
- Repetition: Does the playlist offer distinct programming, or does it repeat generic, interchangeable segments with little variation?
- Viewer benefit: Is there a clear reason to watch the stream beyond its being continuously available?
- Channel context: Do the channel’s videos, metadata, theme, and About section accurately explain what you create and why it is valuable?
- Rights: Do you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material, independently of YouTube’s reused-content review?
- Feature eligibility: Does the channel meet the current YPP, location, age, and membership conditions shown in YouTube Studio?
Memberships are not the same as live-stream ad revenue
Memberships are recurring payments from members for perks. Ads are a separate monetization route: eligible live streams can use pre-roll and display ads, and creators can configure mid-rolls, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. That comparison was averaged across 207 countries and measured in January 2024; it concerns advertising revenue, not membership earnings, subscriber growth, or a promised result for a particular channel. A continuous stream does not itself establish membership eligibility or guarantee members. Treat it as one part of a channel strategy, not a shortcut around YPP requirements or content review.
