Can a Raspberry Pi Run a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream Reliably?

A Raspberry Pi can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but continuous unattended operation takes careful settings, testing, and recovery planning.

Yes—a Raspberry Pi can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live using FFmpeg. But technical feasibility is not proof that a particular Pi setup will stay live unattended for months. Reliability depends on the whole system: encoding load, sustained upload, power and thermal stability, file handling, and recovery from encoder, network, or host failures.

What “reliably” means for a Pi stream

A Pi-based FFmpeg workflow is documented in a community forum post, but that example does not establish a 24/7 uptime record or validate any specific Raspberry Pi model for continuous operation. An open-source headless project describes recovery patterns using FFmpeg and systemd, including responses to encoder crashes, network interruptions, camera loss, and reboots. It is an implementation pattern, not independent evidence that an unconfigured deployment will recover correctly.

There is no established reliability percentage or verified comparison of Pi 4 and Pi 5 for this use. Treat reliability as something to validate in your own installation, rather than a property guaranteed by the board or software.

Configure the stream for YouTube Live

Use YouTube’s current ingest guidance as the target for the outgoing stream. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP, where the encoder supports it. Its published guidance accepts H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with constant bitrate encoding. For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 video and AAC audio are common choices, but confirm that the actual output conforms to YouTube’s requirements.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Setting YouTube guidance Practical meaning
Video codec H.264, H.265, or AV1 Ensure the encoder’s output codec is supported by the ingest destination.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Check the audio stream as well as video; a valid picture does not guarantee valid audio.
Rate control Constant bitrate Configure the encoder for a steady output rate where supported.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set and verify the interval rather than relying on an encoder default.
H.264 at 720p30 3 Mbps recommended video bitrate A platform ingest recommendation, not proof that a Pi can encode this profile continuously.
H.264 at 1080p30 5 Mbps recommended video bitrate Likewise, check both the Pi’s sustained workload and the internet connection.

These settings are from YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026: YouTube Live encoder settings. The listed bitrates are video rates, so allow additional upload capacity for audio and network variation. YouTube advises speed-testing upload capacity; do not size the connection to the encoded rate with no headroom.

Set up and test the Raspberry Pi workflow

  1. Enable YouTube Live in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s live access before your planned start: Enable live streaming.
  2. Create the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in screenshots, or commit it to a public code repository. Revoke or reset it if it is exposed.
  3. Choose a profile the Pi and connection can sustain. Start with a moderate resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s ingest bitrate recommendations do not establish that a particular Pi can decode, loop, and encode a source at that profile. Test the exact board, software, source file, and network you intend to use.
  4. Decide whether to copy or re-encode. If the prerecorded file already has compatible codecs and parameters, a stream-copy approach may avoid unnecessary encoding work. A Pi-oriented FFmpeg/systemd project documents a low-CPU video-copy option. Copying is appropriate only if the source’s codecs, bitrate behavior, keyframes, and other stream properties meet YouTube’s ingest requirements; otherwise configure a transcode and test it. See the project’s documentation: Raspberry Pi streaming project.
  5. Loop the recording and validate playback. Confirm that the file plays through its end and restarts as intended, with audio and video in sync. Test representative movement and sound, not only a static opening frame. A source file that plays locally is not by itself evidence that the encoded live output is accepted or stable.
  6. Supervise the process and startup. Configure process supervision and restart after reboot if unattended recovery is required. Test what happens after an FFmpeg crash, network loss, and a full Pi reboot. Restarting FFmpeg does not necessarily manage every YouTube broadcast or event state, so verify that the stream returns to a live, healthy state rather than assuming process restart is sufficient.
  7. Run a representative trial and monitor it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. Observe the Pi’s temperature, power stability, network behavior, storage, and YouTube’s ingest status. There is no universal test duration established for this setup; make the trial long enough to expose failures relevant to your intended use.

Keep copyright and channel rules in view

A prerecorded stream is still a YouTube live broadcast. Use footage, music, narration, and other material you own or have permission to use, and check the rights for every part of a documentary recording. A technically stable stream does not establish that its content complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s monetization policies. Review YouTube’s current live streaming requirements and the channel’s applicable policy notices before going live.

What can interrupt an unattended Pi stream?

  • Upload capacity varies or is insufficient: lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, then repeat the test. Compare actual upload performance with the stream’s total encoded rate, not just the video target.
  • FFmpeg exits or hangs: inspect its logs and configure a supervisor to restart the process. Test the restart path, including whether YouTube accepts the returning encoder.
  • The network or router drops: confirm that the Pi reconnects and that the broadcast resumes correctly. A process restart alone may not restore the YouTube event lifecycle.
  • The Pi reboots or loses power: verify automatic startup and recovery after a deliberate reboot. The sources do not establish a universally reliable power or storage configuration for continuous use.
  • Heat or workload causes instability: check temperature and encoder load during a representative trial. No model-specific thermal performance or 24/7 benchmark is established here, so avoid assuming a board or case will remain stable without measurement.
  • YouTube reports stream health errors: read the platform’s specific message, then check ingest URL, key, codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio. Use YouTube’s health indicator during testing rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s “connected” status.
  • The broadcast does not become live after reconnect: check the event’s state in YouTube Studio and the encoder’s connection status. Recovery of FFmpeg is distinct from lifecycle management of the YouTube broadcast.

Compare the practical choices

The main decision is whether to maintain the entire local chain yourself or use a cloud service to handle continuous playback. A Pi provides local control, but you remain responsible for the device, power, network, operating system, encoder supervision, and YouTube broadcast state. A more capable local computer or hardware encoder can be another local route, but the available evidence does not establish which model or configuration is the best value. Cloud playback avoids keeping a local encoder running, while making the service provider part of the dependency chain.

StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider when the goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube stream: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
